Message from the Principal

Thanksgiving and the holiday season are fast approaching. Already, we are reflecting on the beginning of the school year and looking ahead to the future. Despite the fact that this is not the best of times in terms of continued school budget restraints, we have many reasons to be thankful. Samohi’s talented administrative team, instructional staff and support staff remain committed to excellence; our parent community leadership teams, PTSA, AAPSSSG, and SOL/ELAC are working together to achieve common goals; and general participation in school events, PTSA meetings and volunteer opportunities has been great! We want to sincerely thank everyone who has joined the PTSA and contributed to our Direct Donation Campaign. These funds are critical and provide much needed support to staff and students. While we are still behind last year’s pace, we are grateful for what we have accomplished and are eternally optimistic about the future. For those of you who have not yet participated, it’s never too late. (See page 5 for more information about Direct Donation.) Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to help your students. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the holiday season. Dear Parents, We are working to stay in close communication with you regarding school events, important dates, and your child's academic progress by providing you with information through Pinnacle and progress reports as well as general information on the web and in the Viking Voice. We are also beginning to use email to notify parents about Samohi and House activities, attendance issues, and other information relevant to your student. House assistants will maintain the email lists. Do we have your current email address? Please encourage your child to take advantage of this support now. Getting additional help during this second grading period can improve grades in time to make a difference for this first semester. Due to budget and staffing reductions, we will not be offering repeat courses in the Spring semester at Samohi. Students who need to retake a course will have the opportunity to do so during summer school, through adult education or through other community options. All of our teachers are available to explain material and help students. Students should make a sincere effort to see their teacher, letting the teacher know they are concerned and want to get the help they need to understand the key concepts and be successful in class. With focused support from individual classroom teachers and general tutoring, we are hoping that students will be able to improve grades early in the semester. Please continue to check Pinnacle to be sure all of your child's assignments are being turned in. Your pinnacle code is included with the first progress report that was just mailed home. All advisors have these as well. The code is the same as last year for returning 10th-12th grade students. Watch the web and upcoming announcements for a November 30th meeting for struggling seniors and their parents. Parent groups and staff are working to create strong supports to ensure that all seniors graduate with good post secondary options. Our PTSA meetings continue to provide good information about programs and options at Samohi. Lock Down Drill on November 19 Please note that on Friday, November 19th, there will be a practice Lock Down Drill at Samohi. In the event that anything were to happen on campus or in the nearby community, all classrooms and campus access would be locked. The administration is giving all families and students advance notice of this drill, so that students will not be off campus and locked out. Students will receive advance notice as to the exact time of the drill, so that they can be in a classroom.

No PTSA Meeting in December!

January PTSA meeting will focus on teen drinking and substance abuse January 11th, 2005 at 7 pm in the student cafeteria Certified Addiction Specialist, Susie Spain, and representatives from local community agencies providing services, will discuss teen alcohol and drug use. Don’t be in denial, know the signs and find out how to help your child. Dr. Straus will give a monthly Principals’ Update. Spanish translation is provided at all PTSA meetings. All are invited!

Special meeting for seniors at risk of not graduating: Tuesday, November 30th at 7 pm

Free Tutoring is available at Samohi! • Many teachers provide additional help after school or during lunch. Have your child ask their teacher if extra help is available.

PTSA, AAPSSSG, SOL/ELAC and the Samohi Administration are planning a meeting for seniors at risk of not graduating and their parents. If your student is suffering from low grades or is missing required classes, please plan on attending and expect to receive a letter in the mail soon.

• College student tutors are now on campus Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 5:00 p.m. in Room T207 and T208 for tutoring and peer advising. Help in Math, English, Biology, and other subjects is provided free of charge.

12 Week Progress Reports will be mailed home – week of December 8th! The 12 week grading period ends

• Math Tutor, volunteer Warren Orloff, is available every day after school until 4:30 in Room H100. • There is always a librarian on hand to help students use the library (open from 7am-5pm Monday – Thursday and from 7am4:30pm on Fridays.) • Study halls and additional tutoring services are being developed by House. Parents and students can check grades and student progress online throughout the school year by using Samohi's Pinnacle Internet Viewer at http://www.samohi.smmusd.org/scripts/piv.exe All you need is your student's school ID number and their Pinnacle PIN number. Both the student ID number and the PIN number were printed on your student's 6 week progress report, or you or your student may get this information from their advisor. Please note that PIN codes are the same as last year for returning 10th-12th grade students.

Why should you bother with these databases when the entire World Wide Web is available through search engines? Here are a few reasons: • Less then 10% of Google is K-12 curriculum-relevant and it focuses mostly on consumer-related information. • Databases provide thousands of newspapers, magazines, and other media types, including websites – not included on search engines. • Databases offer content and curriculum learning resources that correlate to state and national standards. • Search engines include information that may be created by questionable sources. Important Bulletins from our Future Center Counselors • We hope that by the time you read this your seniors have filed their CSU and/or UC application. If not, they have until November 30, 2004, to do so, preferably online. • All paperwork needed to be processed by the Future Center must be received at least two weeks prior to the deadline. In your calculations do not count Thanksgiving break or Winter break, as we do not work those days. If the paperwork is due by January 10, 2005, it must be received in the Future Center by December 10, 2004. Thank you for your cooperation in this. • We will be conducting two FAFSA workshops, to help seniors and their parents apply for financial aid, taking you through the form, line by line. These workshops will be conducted on January 10 and February 22, 2005 at 7 pm in the library. Money is awarded on a first come, first served basis, so try to attend the January workshop and file as soon as possible. There will be Spanish translation available at these workshops. Do NOT file before January 1, 2005. ONLY use the official FAFSA government: www.fafsa.ed.gov • In the near future students will be receiving a copy of a scholarship booklet listing the local scholarships. Every student should fill out the application in the back and look for the scholarships for which they qualify. There is over $500,000 to be awarded to our students. • All Senior athletes thinking about playing a sport in college should file with the NCAA Clearinghouse. (see article below) • The college application process can be stressful, but there are a variety of colleges available to meet the needs and wants of every student, and we will try to help your student find the one for them. • All students should maintain their grades. • Juniors should sign up to take May and/or June SAT I and SAT II tests as well as the ACT test. Going to college and you might play a sport? The NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse is the organization that handles ALL inquiries regarding an individual’s initial eligibility status. Events and notices

Emergency Medicine Policy SMMUSD has policies and procedures in place allowing students to carry emergency medication with them. This law (and education code) state that students must have a doctor's order and parent's permission in order to carry emergency medications (inhaler, epipen and insulin). The school nurse is to instruct the student in how to safely administer the medication to ensure that it is done properly. If your child has emergency medication, or if you have any questions, please contact me.

New this year! Samohi Athletic Gear Samohi athletic gear will be arriving soon, just in time for the holiday season! The athletic wear will be sold at all Samohi home sporting events starting in winter season, and will support all our teams. Grad Nite 2004!

The 15th annual Samohi Grad Nite will begin at 9:30pm, following graduation on Thursday, June 23, 2005. This year's class voted for their fantasy cruise destination to be the Greek Isles. Samohi Grad Nite is an alcohol and drug free celebration for graduating Samohi and Olympic seniors – no outside guests; no underclassman. Volunteers must be at least 22 years old. This party begins at 9:30 pm and lasts until 5:00 am the following morning. Once students arrive (between 9:30-11:30 pm) they are not allowed to leave. No one is admitted after 11:30pm. Grad Nite employs an outside security firm, in addition to campus security and SMPD. The event takes place on the tennis courts which are tented and decorated to reflect a cruise ship theme. Four tennis courts are used, each decorated to reflect island scenery. Once on board, no money is needed – all of the following is covered with their ticket price. There is a food court (healthy snacks, beverages and breakfast items), karaoke room, dance floor with laser lights and dj, casino tables with dealers, carnival games, inflatibles, Sumo wrestling, fortune tellers, bead making, and tattooing. Students are given tickets which are redeemed at our fantastic prize booth. At approximately 3:30 am, the students walk to the Greek Memorial Theatre for a slide show presentation, alumni scholarship drawing, and a campfire. They return to the "ship" for their diploma, a goody bag of items from local businesses and memories to last a lifetime. You can be part of the planning for this exciting event! All grade level parents are invited to our first general meeting, Monday, Nov. 15 at 7:00 pm in the student cafeteria. Committee members will be presenting a brief overview of their important job in planning this event and will be available for questions. The current ticket price is $50. As of Nov. 30, this price will jump to $60. Ticket forms are available in the Activities Office. Ticket forms and payment can be dropped into the Grad Nite Box located in the Activities Office. Financial aid is available, and those forms are also in the Activities Office. As of Nov. 1, the attendees will be listed by school ID number on Samohi’s Grad Nite web page: www.samohi.smmusd.org/Grad_Nite/passenger.htm and in the Administration Breezeway and Activities Office by student name. Senior Yearbook Ads Every year the yearbook sells approximately 200 pages to senior students or groups of senior students who support the book by purchasing a page which they design to celebrate their friends and family. Seniors have the option of buying a layout page or collage page. For the layout page, photos can be enlarged and reduced within a predesigned page of 16, 23, 35 or 47 picture spaces. For the collage, the page appears exactly as it is turned in to us. Prices: Full page layout: $200, collage: $150 A $50 deposit is required to reserve your space. Students should come to B200 before school or at lunch for information and/or to put down their deposit. Students who turn in their completed senior page by Dec. 3 will receive a $25 discount. The final deadline for for all completed senior pages is Wednesday, January 5. Please make checks payable to Santa Monica High School. Come see Play It Again, Sam! Santa Monica High School Theatre's upcoming production is Play It Again, Sam. It is sponsored by the Santa Monica Civic Light Opera, Samohi’s theatre alumni organization that helps mentor and educate current high school students in the various aspects of producing live theatre. Here’s how it works: Your donations + Samohi’s needs = PTSA annual budget Every year, administrators and parent leaders sit down and discuss Samohi’s needs and how money raised through the PTSA’s Direct Donation can be best spent to benefit all students. This is a lengthy and thoughtful process, and the final budget is presented at the Sept. PTSA meeting for all to discuss and approve. Throughout the year, as the donation monies are received, they are then spent as the budget stipulates. Increased donations enable PTSA to be flexible and responsive to emerging school needs. See below for a list of what your Direct Donation monies have purchased this year

Se acerca muy rápido el día de Acción de Gracias y los días de fiesta. Estamos reflexionando acerca del comienzo del c escolar y mirando hacia el futuro. A pesar de que no es el mejor momento con respecto a todas las restricciones en el presupuesto escolar, tenemos muchas razones para estar agradecidos. El talentoso equipo administrativo y el personal de instrucción de Samohi se mantienen comprometidos a sobresalir. Nuestro equipo de liderazgo de padres de nuestra comunidad, PTSA, AAPSSSG Y SOL/ELAC están trabajando juntos para alcanzar sus metas; también la participación en eventos escolares, juntas de la PTSA y oportunidades para voluntarios ha sido grandiosa. Ejercicio a Puerta Cerrada el 19 de Noviembre Por favor tome nota que el viernes 19 de noviembre se realizará la práctica del Ejercicio a Puerta Cerrada (Lock Down Drill) en Samohi. En el evento de que cualquier cosa sucediera en la comunidad, todos los accesos a los salones de clase y el campo escolar serán cerrados. La administración está dando a todas las familias y estudiantes aviso previo así los estudiantes no estarán fuera de la escuela y sin poder entrar. Páginas del Libro Anual de los estudiantes del último año

La 15ava. Noche de Graduación anual de Samohi comienza a las 9:30 p.m., siguiendo la graduación el Jueves 23 de Junio del 2005. La clase de este año votó para que el destino de su Crucero de Fantasía sea a las Islas Griegas. La Noche de Graduación de Samohi es una celebración libre de drogas y alcohol para los que se gradúan de Samohi y los Estudiantes olímpicos del ultimo año - no invitados de fuera ni de clases menores. Los voluntarios deben tener por lo menos 22 anos de edad. La fiesta comienza a las 9:30p.m. hasta las 5:00 a.m. del día siguiente. Una vez que los estudiantes llegan (entre las 9:30-11:30 p.m.) no esta permitido que salgan de la fiesta . Nadie puede ingresar después del las 11:00 p.m. "Grad Nite" contrata un servicio de seguridad particular aparte de la seguridad del colegio y SMPD. El evento es en las canchas de tenis las cuales tienen una carpa y están decoradas como si fuera un barco. Se están usando cuatro canchas de tenis y serán decoradas con estilo de las islas. Cuando estén abordo, no se necesitara dinero - lo siguiente esta incluido en el precio de su entrada: Habrá un área de comidas, (meriendas saludables, bebidas y desayuno) salón de Karaoke, pista de baile con luces de láser y dj, mesas de casino, juegos de feria, luchadores de Sumo, adivinas de la suerte y tatuajes. ¡Los estudiantes recibirán boletos los cuales son canjeados en nuestro fantástico kiosco de premios! Aproximadamente a las 3:30 am, los estudiantes caminarán hacia el "Greek Memorial Theater" para una presentación de fotos diapositivas, rifa de becas para los alumnos y una fogata. Después regresan a su "barco" por sus diplomas, una bolsa con sorpresas de algunos negocios locales y memorias que durarán toda la vida. Usted puede ser parte del planeamiento de este gran evento. Padres de todos los grados están invitados a participar en la primera junta general el lunes 15 de noviembre a las 7:00 pm en la cafetería. Los miembros de los comités les darán una idea del trabajo tan importante que tienen para planear este evento y estarán disponibles para cualquier pregunta. Por favor, vengan, escuchen, aprendan y asóciense para ayudar a planear esta celebración. El precio actual de la entrada es $50. El 30 de noviembre el precio subirá a $60. Cada año el Libro Anual vende aproximadamente 200 páginas a estudiantes del último año o a grupos de estudiantes del último año quienes apoyan el libro comprando la página que ellos diseñan para celebrar a sus amigos y familiares. Los estudiante tienen la opción de comprar un Página de Diseño o Página de “Collage.” Para la página de diseño las fotos pueden ser alargadas y reducidas dentro de una página ya designada de 16, 23, 35 o 47 espacios de fotos. Para la página “collage”, las páginas aparecen exactamente como nos las entregan. Precios: Página de diseño completa: $200 Collage: $150.00 Se requiere un deposito de $50.00 para reservar el espacio. Los estudiantes deben venir al salón B200 antes de la escuela o a la hora del almuerzo para más información o para pagar su deposito. Drop off a Frozen Turkey to be donated to Westside FoodBank Friday, November 19th, 7 to 8:30 am Where: Frozen Turkeys can be dropped off at barrels positioned at each entrance to Samohi. (7th and Michigan, Senior Lot, Olympic and the tennis courts) What: Bring Uncooked, Frozen whole Turkeys for Donation to Local Social Service Agencies. All turkeys collected will be donated to F.A.I.T.H. (Families Assistance Involving the Homeless) and West Hollywood Food Coalition to be served on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 2004 to local homeless families and individuals, low income families, and Community Access Center Kitchens.
