  Dear Families, Partners, and Colleagues,    This week, principals and district leaders attended a leadership retreat at  UMass and twenty‐seven novice teachers attended the 2016 New Teacher  Induction and  ongoing mentoring  program.  This year  the program has  been expanded to  better support all  teachers new to  Holyoke. New  teachers are  spending two weeks  engaging in  simulated teaching  experiences and  targeted professional  development  sessions.    Please join me in welcoming Mr. Luis Soria to our leadership team as Chief  Academic Officer.  Mr. Soria has been an educator for twenty‐three years.  His journey as an educator began in 1992 as a teacher of English Learners,  returning with pride to the neighborhood elementary school he attended in  the Little Village community in Chicago. Most recently, he was Chief of  Schools for Network 8. In this role, he led, coached, and developed thirty‐ three school administrators and staff in the Network of Chicago Public  Schools with the highest population of low income students, and English  Learners. In Network 8, he was responsible for the achievement of 30,000  students.  Please join me in welcoming Luis to Holyoke (See below for more  information about Luis).    Have a wonderful weekend!   Sincerely,  Steve 

 

 

BACK TO SCHOOL The district will be distributing 520 HP laptops for teachers and counselors, and 1,500 Chromebooks for students. This new, grant-funded technology, will be deployed prior to the start of school. Read more.  Saturday, August 13th from 2pm to 6pm at Carlos Vega Park in Holyoke the Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative is hosting a back to school event. The first 1,200 school aged youth from Holyoke will receive a bag of school supplies.

   School begins for all HPS incoming 9th grade students with a 3 day orientation at Holyoke High School. The orientation will run from 8 to 11AM, Tuesday, August 23rd through Thursday, August 25th. It is important that all 9th grade students attend this orientation as there will be important information provided and there are many activities planned that will help prepare students to begin the school year on a positive note. For those students who signed up for Explorations, and will be visiting Dean on Thursday, August 25th to explore career opportunities at Dean Technical High School, you must wear boots, long pants and a shirt with sleeves Additionally, there will be a luncheon for all 9th grade students and their families on Thursday, August 25 th from 11:00 AM-12:00 PM at Holyoke High School. We are very excited to welcome the class of 2020!

  Introducing Chief Academic Officer Mr. Luis Soria Mr. Soria has been an educator for twenty-three years. His journey as an educator began in 1992 as a teacher of English Learners, returning with pride to the neighborhood elementary school he attended in the Little Village community in Chicago. In 2000, he was the first Latino in Illinois to pursue and achieve National Board Certification. Since then, he has served children as a Bilingual Lead Teacher, Mathematics/Science coach, Reading Coach, Management Support Director, and Principal. From 2006 to 2012 he led Mitchell Elementary School (K-8) where he refined his leadership skills to transform an underperforming, struggling campus into a dynamic destination schoolhouse. As principal, he developed and sustained systems and structures such as the Instructional Leadership Team and Cycles of Continuous Improvement. In 2012 he was selected to become a Network Deputy Chief of the Pilsen Little Village Network, returning once again to his childhood roots. Three months later, he was named a Chief of Schools, selected to lead schools in the southwest side of the city. Most recently, he was Chief of Schools for Network 8. In this role, he led, coached, and developed thirty-three school administrators and staff in the Network of Chicago Public Schools with the highest population of low income students, and English Learners. In Network 8, he was responsible for the achievement of 30,000 students. To work toward this goal, he conducted one-one and small group school learning walks with administrators to determine and implement strategic and sustained supports for teacher capacity growth. He facilitated data analysis to inform explicit strategies for systemic and systematic school and student improvement structures and processes.

Regreso a la Escuela El distrito escolar estará distribuyendo 520 HP ordenadores portátiles para maestros y consejeros, y 1500 Chromebooks para los estudiantes. Esta nueva tecnología financiada mediante una subvención, se desplegará antes del inicio de clases. 

 Sábado, 13 de agosto desde las 2pm a 6pm en el Parque Carlos Vega en Holyoke - La Iniciativa del Vecindario Seguro de Holyoke llevará a cabo un evento de regreso a la escuela. Los primeros 1200 jóvenes de edad escolar de Holyoke recibirán una bolsa de útiles escolares



.La escuela comienza para todos los estudiantes entrantes de noveno grado de las Escuelas Públicas de Holyoke con una orientación de 3 días en la Escuela Superior de Holyoke. La orientación se desarrollará de 8 a 11am, el martes, 23 de agosto hasta el jueves, 25 de agosto. Es importante que todos los estudiantes de noveno grado asistan a esta orientación, ya que se proporcionará información importante y hay muchas actividades previstas que ayudarán a preparar a los estudiantes para comenzar el año escolar con una nota positiva. Para aquellos que se inscribieron para las exploraciones y estarán visitando la escuela Dean el jueves 25 para explorar oportunidades de carrera en la Escuela Superior Dean Técnica, debe usar botas, pantalones largos y camisas con mangas.



Cuando visite el Mercado de los Agricultores de Holyoke Holyoke Farmers Market los jueves este verano, pasar por la mesa de (HELI Iniciativa de Alfabetización Temprana de Holyoke) y aprenda acerca de las actividades de alfabetización para sus hijos. En la izquierda: Un agradecimiento especial a los voluntarios de HELI, José, que ha pasado tiempo este verano en la mesa de HELI leyendo a los niños pequeños y educando a los padres sobre las oportunidades de alfabetización.

Introduciendo el Jefe Académico Sr. Luis Soria     El Sr. Soria ha sido maestro durante veintitrés años.  Su jornada como educador comenzó en 1992 como maestro de los estudiantes  aprendices del lenguaje inglés, volviendo con orgullo a la escuela elemental de su vecindario que él asistió en la comunidad Little Village  en Chicago.  En 2000, fue el primer latino en Illinois en perseguir y alcanzar la Certificación del Consejo Nacional. Desde entonces, se ha  desempeñado como Maestro Líder Bilingüe, Entrenador de Matemáticas / Ciencia, Entrenador de Lectura, Director de Apoyo  Administrativo y Principal.      Del 2006 a 2012 el dirigió la Escuela Elemental Mitchell (K‐8), donde perfeccionó sus habilidades de liderazgo para transformar un bajo  rendimiento, luchando por el plantel en una escuela de destino dinámico.  Como director, desarrolló y sostuvo un sistema y estructuras,  como el Equipo de Liderazgo Educativo y Ciclos de Mejora Continua.  En el 2012 fue seleccionado para convertirse en Jefe de la Red de  Deputy de Pilsen Little Village Red, volviendo una vez más a mis raíces de la niñez. Tres meses más tarde, fue nombrado Jefe de  Escuelas, seleccionado para dirigir escuelas en el lado suroeste de la ciudad.      Más recientemente, fue Jefe de Escuelas de la Red 8.  En este rol, él dirigió, entrenó, y desarrolló treinta y tres administradores de las  escuelas y el personal en la Red de las Escuelas Públicas de Chicago con la mayor población de estudiantes de bajos ingresos y  aprendices del lenguaje inglés.  Dentro de la Red 8, fue responsable de la realización de logros de 30,000 estudiantes. Para trabajar  hacia su meta, el llevó a cabo un uno a uno y grupos pequeños de Caminatas de Aprendizajes con los administradores para determinar  e implementar apoyos estratégicos y sostenidos para el crecimiento de la capacidad docente.   Él facilitó el análisis de datos para  informar estrategias explícitas para la escuela sistémica y sistemática y estructuras de mejoramiento del estudiante y procesos.
