Prayer for the Sick Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illness, make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this through the Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen.

Dear Friends, A few items that have crossed my desk in the past couple of weeks which I thought you might find of interest: 1) Five Little Monkeys is having a 100 Days ‘Til Christmas Sale (25% off everything). What happened to Halloween and Thanksgiving? 2) Coldwell Commercial Banker wants to buy OLL. I wonder how the Archbishop would feel about this? 3) In the August 31st edition of the Chronicle, there was an article about an earthquake damaged Church in Vallejo entitled: “Parishioners Stronger than Church’s Damage.” I wonder if the same thing could be said about OLL? 4) In the September 16th edition of the Chronicle, there was an article about a Buddha Statue being placed in the middle of one of the most crime ridden neighborhoods in Oakland. The person who placed it there is not even Buddhist! Every morning at 7 o’clock, people gather there to pray. In the past six months, crime in that neighborhood is down a whopping 80%. The power of faith and prayer! This past week, I have gotten an earful from you about why people aren’t giving to the Church like they used to. Thank you for your responses! The bottom line is this: even though our numbers have increased, and thus our parish services (all good things), our giving has not kept pace with our numbers and services (not a good thing). In the next couple of weeks, staff will be told about cutting back their hours and benefits. I am not looking forward to this and the impact these decisions will have on their lives and the lives of their families. But I also know we cannot continue to deficit spend and continue to draw down our Savings Account. I have asked my staff to take a hit and I feel that I, being your pastor, need to take a hit as well. I have thought about this and have prayed over this for the past month, and this is what I have come up with: I make $2,300 a month. Beginning October 1st, I will give $1,000 of my paycheck back to the parish. I will also give back all sacramental stipends I get (usually around $300 a month). This is more than half my salary and yes, it will hurt. But how can I ask others to sacrifice if I don’t sacrifice myself! Most of the money I make, I usually give away to different charities. My charity now has become OLL. I do this with much joy and gratitude. God has been very good to me. The least I can do is give back a little something to God. I remember my mom, working minimum wage jobs, to keep a roof over our heads as kids. But she always had a little something left over each month to give to her different charities. Even if it was only a wrinkled $5 bill, she gave what she had. Growing up during the Depression, she knew what it was like to do without, but she also learned that it was an honor and a privilege to give because there was always someone worse off than you. I don’t expect anything to change around here financially because of my giving back. All I know is that this is a personal decision for me and I respect any decision you make for yourself. For me, I know I am doing the right thing and I feel very happy about it. God is good. God is very good! Have a great week! He pedido a mi personal para tener un éxito y me siento que yo, siendo su pastor, necesito tener un éxito así. BIBLE STUDY What different kinds of books are in the New Testament? When, how, and why were they written? What do they teach? Who actually wrote them? How were they passed forward through history? And, perhaps most important of all, why and how did some books, and not others, come to be collected into what Christians came to consider the canon of scripture that would define their belief for all time? Second Collection for Priests’ Retirement The Priests' Retirement Fund ensures and provides for the adequate care and support of the retired priests of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. With the increasing cost of health care and other basic necessities, a priest’s pension covers daily living expenses but not much else. The Priests’ Retirement Fund supports those in need of supplementary assistance by paying for expense such as non-insured medical costs, a portion of extended care costs and housing costs associated with independent living. As the priests of the Archdiocese have served us for over 150 years, this collection allows us to serve them by providing for their needs after active ministry. Your generous gift to the Priests’ Retirement Fund is a tremendous blessing shared to the priests and gives great comfort to them.

Algunas fechas importantes en relación con el inicio de nuestro programa: Domingo 21 de septiembre de 9 a.m. Misa del Domingo Catequético Domingo 28 de septiembre de 9 a.m. Misa Liturgia de la Palabra para Niños reanuda. Segunda Colecta para Fondo de Retiro de los Sacerdotes El Fondo de Jubilación para sacerdotes garantiza y prevé la atención adecuada y el apoyo de los sacerdotes jubilados de la Arquidiócesis de San Francisco. Con el creciente costo de la atención de la salud y otras necesidades básicas, la pensión de un sacerdote cubre los gastos de la vida diaria, pero no mucho más. El Fondo de Retiro de los Sacerdotes apoya a los necesitados de asistencia suplementaria mediante el pago de los gastos, tales como gastos médicos no asegurados, una parte de los costos de atención prolongada y costos de vivienda asociados a la vida independiente. Como los sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis nos han servido durante más de 150 años, esta colección nos permite servir al proporcionarles a sus necesidades después de ministerio activo. Su generosa donación al Fondo de Jubilación de Sacerdotes es una tremenda bendición compartida para los sacerdotes y da gran consuelo para ellos.
