Living God’s Word Panhandlers are utterly dependent on charity for their daily bread. They have nothing of real value, so they have nothing to lose. Might our self-sufficiency, selfdefensiveness, and self-importance blind us to something that their poverty reveals? Like Bartimaeus, we must depend utterly on Jesus for mercy, vision, direction, and daily bread.

Let God Be God By Cynthia Reyes Someone once told me that a good gauge of knowing if we were in right relationship with God was to examine our relationship with others. How true! When things get out of kilter in our relationships with others, more than likely, our relationship with God needs to be tweaked and realigned. In Luke’s gospel today, there are two people in relationship with God, one standing front and center of the temple area, exalting himself and creating a barrier between him and God with his arrogance. The other man finds himself at a distance, with down cast eyes, perhaps thinking that he should not have even entered the temple area because of his sinfulness. Jesus teaches us today that authentic prayer and right relationship before God and others come only from true self-knowledge. If we are completely honest, we can be like the Pharisee, not wanting to own our own shortcomings, failings, and weaknesses. Likewise, we can also be like the tax collector acknowledging who we really are and recognize our need for God’s mercy. Right relationship with God comes only from knowing ourselves as God knows us; standing before God as we are, with all weaknesses and failings. And we pray accordingly, letting God be God.

TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! In announcing his decisions to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy. “Supporting the young churches throughout the world with your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through your gift in today’s collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith!
