Pastor’s Letter October 22/23

A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land

Dear Parish Family, It was just a little more than five years ago that I made my first trip to the Holy Land. A deacon in my parish had put the pilgrimage together and invited me to go as their spiritual director. I did not quite know what to expect. It was a long overnight trip. We arrived in Tel Aviv and then took a bus trip to Galilee, arriving there well after dark. We ate dinner and tumbled into bed. The next morning we met our guide and were led to our first stop, the Mount of the Beatitudes. I assumed we would have Mass in the beautiful church built on the mountain. But our server led us out of the building and over to a spot on the hillside where there was an outdoor altar. We had Mass overlooking the Sea of Galilee on the very spot where Jesus taught his disciples the Beatitudes so many years ago. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. In the seminary I studied the geography of the Bible, so whenever I read a gospel I had a picture of the scene in my mind. But to this day I never read a gospel without thinking of what it was like to actually be in the places where the events of our faith took place. In many ways a trip to the Holy Land is the ultimate pilgrimage. What makes a trip a pilgrimage as opposed to a vacation or a tour? The difference is really in the attitude and purpose of the person making the pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is about faith and faith always involves a journey. Faith takes us from where we are to a place closer to God. Sometimes a pilgrimage is deliberately physically difficult. Some pilgrims climb mountains to remind themselves that faith is an ascent to God. Some walk many miles to remind themselves that faith, like life, is a long journey that requires constancy and persistence. Some walk in the footsteps of the saints and some travel to places where others have had profound experiences of God. Pilgrims, in other words, allow their journey to symbolize their life as a movement toward God and God’s goodness. This Lent I will be leading a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. It is an opportunity for those who can join me to see firsthand where the great events of our faith took place. Feel the heat of the desert where Jesus was tempted. Stand and renew your baptism in the same waters where John baptized Jesus. Sail on the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on water. Stand on the very stones where Pilate condemned Jesus to death. Pray at the Mount of the Beatitudes or in the Garden of Gethsemane. Be a pilgrim. I invite you to consider joining me on this pilgrimage. There will be an information night this Tuesday at 7 PM in the rectory for you to learn more about this trip. Consider taking part in a journey that will forever change how you hear and live the gospels.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Pastor

Enter the Holy Door of Mercy

Faith and Ministries

Sacred Hearts has been chosen as one of four churches in the Diocese of Rockville Centre to have a Holy Door of Mercy through which pilgrims may obtain the same blessings as if they were to visit the jubilee door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. One may walk through this door at any time but during this Holy Year of Mercy we will celebrate Eucharistic Adoration on Thursday from the conclusion of the noon mass until Benediction at 4:00 PM. We will also have confessions during this time and our Spanish community will pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We call Parishioners who support this time of prayer our Anchors of Mercy. If you are willing to join them please just come any Thursday during those hours.

Secular Franciscans meet on the Second Sunday of the month after the 11 AM Mass in the Parish Center. You are always welcome to come to our meetings. Please come, bring a friend, bring a snack for breakfast, and we supply the coffee.

Reflections On the Gospel October 23, 2016

Sunday’s first reading tells us, “They who serve God willingly are heard; their petition reaches the heavens.” Very comforting words, but how are they heard by those who serve willingly and pray faithfully, yet struggle against hunger, homelessness, unemployment, illness, conflict, or a combination of these afflictions? Likely their faith is challenged. Then the Gospel tells us that a seemingly righteous man who is not greedy, dishonest or adulterous is not “justified” by God. How does that make those who strive to live equally righteous lives feel? Likely quite upset. What’s going on here? Perhaps we need to consider humbly and honestly why such things as hunger and homelessness persist? How righteous are we? Is there something more we can do to help alleviate them? Maybe we can’t give more in goods, but maybe we can give more in prayer and presence to nourish faith and extend mercy.

While emphasizing the need to promote recogniƟon and respect for the new life of a pre-born baby, we seek to promote the dignity of human life at all ages, regardless of the presence of illness or disability. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE HAS BEGUN -- September 28 through November 6th. Launched in 2007, 40 days for life has become one of the largest Pro-Life efforts, with tens of thousands participating worldwide. In an attempt to address the over one-million abortions per year in our nation alone, this period of prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigils at abortion centers, gives each of us a chance to contribute. Please participate in whatever way you can to promote respect for the new life of the unborn. For more information go to www.40daysforlife.com.

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
