“Pray Always. Work Hard. Work Together!” Dear Friends, Please join me in congratulating Archbishop Blase Cupich for being named to the College of Cardinals. He will serve the Church and our Archdiocese well in this new role. Pray always. Work hard. Work together. Never give up. Trust God. Great things will happen. This weekend’s Scripture readings provide a perfect Launchpad for the twofold task we have at hand as the family of Saint John Berchmans: generously committing to the To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign, and working with the Archdiocese on the Renew My Church Initiative. Last Saturday, October 8, we held our annual Guardian Angel Gala. It was a beautiful event where we raised over a hundred ten thousand dollars for financial assistance to the children in our school. I congratulate our guardian angels, Ron and Carolyn Winterfield and family, and thank Rochelle Brophy, Julie Lyons, Ed Grochowiak, Jennifer and Doug Mota, and Theresa and Khanh Bui for their hard work. We need more dedicated people like them! As is our custom, we welcomed back a graduate who received financial assistance in her time here. Last year we listened to Brandon Wilson, a graduating senior at Northwestern University. On Saturday we heard an uplifting and inspiring message from Krystal Paul-Emile, a senior at Josephinum Academy of the Sacred Heart, a young woman with a great and promising future, who credits her successes to her experience being part of this great community. She calls Saint John Berchmans her family. Krystal recalled a place she visited last summer in Lourdes, the Community of Cenacolo – and said that the Saint John Berchmans community operates in a similar way. An Italian sister, Sister Elvira founded the Community of Cenacolo about thirty years ago. With a desire to serve those most in in need, and with a radical reliance on Divine Providence, Sister built her community on three pillars: hard work, prayer and true friendship. Krystal found a striking

similarity between the Cenacolo community and our own. I just wish more of you were at the Gala to hear Krystal’s story of success.
Krystal told of our coming together to surround her with love in a dark period of her life. She spoke of being supported by many members of the Saint John Berchmans community - mentioning many of them by name. On Saturday, I was a proud pastor, quite proud of Krystal’s poise in delivering her meaningful address, and very proud of the community we call Saint John Berchmans. As Aaron and Hur did for Amalek, we hold each other up in times of weakness. We support each other with strength and love. We give without counting the cost. We work hard together to accomplish great things. We pray with and for each other in good times and in challenging ones. We don’t give up when the chips are down. Krystal was right. We too build our community on the pillars of prayer, hard work and true friendship.
Inspired by Krystal, I have no doubt we will come together and succeed in thisToTeachWho Christ Is campaign. Eleven years ago this week, Cardinal George asked me to consider becoming your pastor. Since my arrival, I have exclaimed that great things are happening here. Sure, we’ve had our bumps in the road, but the excellence continues. This Thursday, October 20, at 6:00pm and next Sunday at 10:30am we will gather to explore the future of this parish community and commit together to ensuring that the great things will not stop happening. Please join us at one or both important meetings. When we pray, work hard together, and live as true friends, and when we don’t give up, God will work wonders. This week’s Cubs games – a 13-inning loss and a ninth inning rally to win the NLDS – demonstrate this philosophy in the sporting life. Let’s practice it in real life. Peace,

Our Mission:

Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

A YEAR OFMERCY PROVE

Parish Announcements

The way that God’s mercy has taken hold of us and our world proves God’s love for us. In Jesus Christ, and most especially in his death, God’s mercy assures us of God’s love and favor. We can surrender ourselves entirely to God with trust and con dence. God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

2ND COLLECTION WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Next Sunday, October 23rd we will be having a 2nd collection for World Mission Sunday. The offerings collected are gathered into the universal solidarity fund and distributed by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in the name of the Pope among the mission dioceses and missionaries of the world.

Catholic Faith Corner:

FIRST COMMUNION RITE OF ENROLLMENT: PRAY FOR THEM

Weekly Word on the Boulevard

Children who will be making their First Holy Communion in May 2017 take part in a special Rite of Enrollment on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the 9:45 a.m. Mass. In this ritual, the children affirm their desire to receive the sacrament of Eucharist and say they are willing to participate at Mass, pray and develope a closer relationship with Jesus. Parents promise to bring their children to Mass and encourage them to pray, and the faith community as a whole is asked to support, mentor and pray for the children and their families as they prepare for the sacrament. Join us and walk with these children as they journey toward this blessed milestone in their lives.

Brought to you by the Faith Formation & Education Commission & SJB people of God This is a space for you, the people of SJB, to share what it means to bring your faith to life in your every day. It is an opportunity to share spiritual reflections, faith traditions, and different ways of praying. “¡Qren Siempre. Trabajen arduamente. Trabajen Juntos!”
