This week we will be celebrating the 4th of July, our Independence Day in the United States. Many of us will be gathering to share food, play games and come together as family and neighbors to recognize the blessings we share in our nation. We will hear the fireworks and the voices of joy traveling throughout our towns and cities as we remember the gift of freedom. It is this gift of freedom, we as Christians, recognize as the first and most important blessing from God. As we re-read Rediscover Jesus we hear these powerful words in Chapter 7, “God values freedom…Without freedom there is no love, because we can only ever love to the extent that we are free.” (p. 45) The desire and longing for freedom is at the heart of every person because we are made in the image of God. Fulfilling this act of freedom is choosing to love even in the midst of conflict. Placing Jesus at the center of our lives helps us to see and know the blessings of our brothers and sisters in recognizing their gifts and how they enrich our lives. As you share meals and time with others this 4th of July celebrate God’s gift of freedom with joy and invite a friend to come to Mass with you in the coming week. God Bless, Fr. Mark SVDP/Outreach Corner Backpack Drive: The St. Vincent de Paul Society @ St. Lucy continues our annual Back to School Backpack Program for the needy children of the families we serve in our SVDP Outreach. We invite the parish to help with this program by donating needed backpacks and school supplies. Basic school supplies and backpacks (no Blue or Red) will be collected at all Masses through the end of July. All donations and supplies must be deposited at the church by July 25. Please see list of needed items in fliers. Drop off backpacks and supplies to containers near Church entrances or the Outreach office during business hours. If making a monetary donation, please make out to St. Vincent de Paul @St. Lucy. Those interested in receiving a backpack must register at the SVDP outreach office by July 22nd. This includes our current clients and any new clients. If you are a family in need of backpacks and school supplies for your children, please call the outreach office @ 408 378-8086 for more information. S.H.A.R.E.S.: If you shop at FoodMax, Lucky, Save Mart or SMART foods you can help the needy in Santa Clara County by registering for e-script at https://secure.escrip.com/signup/index.jsp and choosing St. Vincent de Paul (Group ID #: 500777590) as your charity of choice. The merchant will donate up to 3% of your purchases to SVDP of Santa Clara County. You can also choose to support the St. Lucy Parish School at the same time. SVDP/Outreach Information Table: On the weekend of June 4-5 the St. Lucy Conference of SVDP had an information table near the PAC after most Masses. We want to thank all of you who stopped by and talked with us. Our goal of obtaining more volunteers to help in the Outreach Office on a weekly basis and others for our special programs like Backpacks and Christmas Baskets was accomplished. We appreciate your willingness to help us help the needy in our Parish. Pantry Needs: Canned Soup and Canned Whole Meals (i.e. Chili, Ravioli etc.)

Esta semana vamos a celebrar el 4 de julio, el Día de la Independencia en los Estados Unidos. Muchos nos reuniremos para compartir comida, jugar juegos y unirnos como familia y vecinos para reconocer las bendiciones que compartimos en nuestro país. Vamos a escuchar los fuegos artificiales y las voces de alegría que viajan a lo largo de nuestros pueblos y ciudades recordando el don de la libertad. El don de la libertad, nosotros, como cristianos, se reconoce como la primera y la más importante bendición de Dios. Cuando volvemos a leer el libro Vuelve a Descubrir a Jesús , escuchamos las palabras potentes en el capítulo 7, “Dios valora tanto la libertad…Sin libertad no hay amor, porque solamente podemos amar tanto como seamos libres.” (p39) El deseo y el anhelo por la libertad está en el corazón de cada persona porque estamos creados en la imagen de Dios. St. Lucy’s Church is offering tutoring and assistance to students of elementary school, who are struggling in reading and writing, from July 25 to August 11, 2016.
