Friday, January 1, 2016: Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, is not a Holyday of Obligation. (In the Diocese of Salt Lake City, the Solemnity of Mary of God, has been abrogated.) However, St. Joseph Parish will celebrate this Solemnity with a Mass a 10:00am in English and 12:00pm in Spanish.

New Year’s Eve Mass We are having our traditional New Year’s Eve Party with a bilingual, midnight Mass beginning at 11:30 p.m. the last half hour of the year in order to thank God for 2015. By the time midnight strikes, we are usually at the Consecration in the Mass, giving us a chance to ask God for His Consecration, blessings and favors for the year 2016.

Pope Francis said in an address from 2013, "Mary, whose 'yes' opened the door for God to undo the knot of the ancient disobedience, is the Mother who patiently and lovingly brings us to God, so that he can untangle the knots of our soul by his fatherly mercy." What would this Jubilee Year of Mercy look like without Mary saying yes to God's plan for her? Would we even have such a year?

El Papa Francisco dijo en un discurso del año 2013: "María, que con su «sí» ha abierto la puerta a Dios para deshacer el nudo de la antigua desobediencia, es la madre que con paciencia y ternura nos lleva a Dios, para que él desate los nudos de nuestra alma con su misericordia de Padre". ¿Cómo sería este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia sin el sí que dio María al plan que Dios había preparado para ella? ¿Sería aún posible tener tal año?

Mary is the Mother who lovingly brings us to God, the one who turns human yesses into miracles. Mary not only gave birth to the Son of God, she gave birth to our hope that by our own affirmative reply to God's calling in our life, that God will comfort and care for us as his own. Our Lady is then not only the Mother of God, but the Mother of Mercy, for without her, the pathway of mercy and grace does not break into our world. We then must demonstrate our gratefulness for her answer to God by becoming vessels of God's mercy for others. Just as he turned her yes into the Incarnation, God can turn our yes into a way for others to encounter Jesus Christ. God can untangle knots in others through our generosity and compassion. He can shower mercy upon a world in such desperate need of it through our actions and gestures of love. This is what it means to be a mature disciple and to live a stewardship way of life. Mary is the Mother of God, but she is our Mother as well. What better way to give thanks to the woman who made this possible with her gesture of love than by offering that same love to the world? As the social service arm of the Diocese, Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) provides opportunities each month to put our faith into action. CCS would like to thank everyone for your support during this holiday season. With your help we will be able to provide over 1,300 low-income, homeless, and refugee children with gifts through our Gift of the Drummer program; 2,100 holiday food boxes to hungry individuals and families; and hundreds of warm winter wear to those in need- all on top of our regular services. This is only possible through your generosity. Donations are collected at your local parish or at any CCS location. María es la Madre que amorosamente nos lleva a Dios; a ese Dios que convierte en milagros todos los síes humanos. María no sólo dio a luz al Hijo de Dios, también dio a luz a nuestra esperanza de que por nuestra respuesta afirmativa al llamado de Dios en nuestra vida, Dios nos consolará y nos cuidará. Nuestra Señora, por tanto, no es sólo Madre de Dios, sino también Madre de la Misericordia, ya que sin ella el camino de la misericordia y de la gracia no entra en el mundo. Debemos demostrar nuestra gratitud por la respuesta que ella dio a Dios convirtiéndonos en recipientes de la misericordia de Dios, para ofrecerla a los demás. World Day of Peace January 1, 2016 Pope Francis chooses theme:

Overcome Indifference and Win Peace Every day, we hear of issues—such as war, poverty, or persecution—that affect our brothers and sisters around the world. The problems can seem so large, complex, and remote that they can leave us paralyzed, overwhelmed, or even numb. We may wonder, “What can I possibly do?” In his Message for the 49th World Day of Peace, celebrated on Jan. 1, 2016, Pope Francis urges us to overcome such challenges by replacing isolation with community, and indifference with solidarity. In our families, schools, and institutions, we must foster awareness about problems such as intolerance, religious persecution, slavery, war, and the plight of refugees. We must encounter our neighbors, engage in civil dialogue, cooperate, and build skills to together address these problems in meaningful ways. Working together, we can creatively overcome inaction and indifference and work toward peace and respect for the lives and dignity of all people.

PRAYER TO OVERCOME INDIFFERENCE All too often, Lord, we turn away from the world’s many problems, which seem too big, too complex, or too far away. Forgive us our indifference. It is easier, Lord, to see only what is around us: our lives, our homes, our challenges. Forgive us our isolation. Help us to see with your eyes: eyes which notice one another and help us understand. Help us to dream your dream: of communities that reach out and dialogue and where diverse people creatively cooperate. Help us to be people of solidarity and action, so moved by prayer, encounter, and understanding that peace can become a reality. Amen.

“Vence la Indiferencia y Conquista la Paz” Cada día oímos hablar de cuestiones—como la guerra, la pobreza o la persecución—que afectan a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en todo el mundo. Los problemas pueden parecer tan grandes, complejos y remotos que pueden dejarnos paralizados, abrumados o incluso insensibilizados.
