Thank you for all your gifts and warm wishes during the holiday season! During this portion of the school year students will demonstrate more independence with their organizational skills, their schoolwork, and their routines. We will continue to give them opportunities to use this independence in their reading choices, games they play, and writing. Together we can foster the development of this stage in your child’s first grade year.

FIRST GRADE STUDIES THIS MONTH

SOCIAL STUDIES We will learn about famous Americans, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., George Washington Carver, Eleanor Roosevelt, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and George Washington.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS We will: -continue to deepen our understanding of the characters, settings, and important events in fiction stories; -learn about the features of non-fiction text, including pictures, headings, charts, and captions; -learn about biographies by reading examples of them and writing our own; -work on correctly forming capital and lowercase letters using ending punctuation; and -practice writing at least 3 sentences about a single topic using descriptive words Sight Words: a, am, and, are, come, did, do, down, for, go, get, good, he, have, here, him, I, like, look, me, my, one, see, she, the, they, this, to, two, that, up, you, want, we, what, where, who, you. (New words this month *) *I’m, *it’s, *we’ll, *came, *this, *they, *us, *made, *went, *of, *park, **then. We encourage students to practice writing these words at home and for parents to make flashcards to practice reading them by sight. SPANISH LANGUAGE ARTS We will be working on: -describing family members using adjectives -describing things we do with our families -reading and learning poems and songs about family members -identifying and describing rooms of the house -learning to use the appropriate possessive pronouns such as my, your, his, her Adjectives: intelligent, loving, kind, generous, nice, funny, hard worker, tall, short, big, small, young, older, younger, near, far MATH These are some of the concepts and skills we will be learning in math: -Review and build on student’s understanding of tens and units (extra ones) by grouping objects into tens and ones, and by representing them numerically and with symbols -count from 1-100 and write the corresponding numerals -count forward by ones, twos, fives, and tens to 100 and backward by ones from 30 -apply place value concepts when solving problems -explore number relationships Vocabulary: ones, tens, place value, digit, skip counting, estimate, reasonable, addition, subtraction, equal sign, equation, counting on, ten groups, more, less, inside, outside, in, out, before, after, count by 1’s, count by 2’s, count by 10’s, count by 5’ SCIENCE Unit 8: Objects in the Sky Big Idea (a broad statement about the science topic we are studying) The sun warms land, air, and water. The appearance of objects in the sky changes. Essential Questions (for exploring the Big Idea) · What can we see in the sky? · How does the sky seem to change? · How does the sun seem to move? ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! ¡Muchas gracias por sus regalos y sus afectuosos saludos durante las celebraciones de fin de año! En ésta temporada del año escolar los niños podrán demostrar más independencia en sus destrezas de organización, en su trabajo y rutinas. Continuaremos dándoles oportunidades para que se desempeñen independientemente en el momento de elegir libros, en su escritura y cuando juegan. Juntos podemos fomentar se desarrollo en ésta etapa. Por favor continúe leyendo con su niño cada noche por un mínimo de, 20 minutos.
