NEWSLET TER Issue 11 - 25th November 2022

From the Executive Headteacher... Our children have had some wonderful curriculum opportunities this term. Last week, in classrooms and in the design technology studio, bread making was the theme with children from Year 2 mixing, kneading, baking, filling and then, of course, eating their delicious bread rolls. This week, in the DT studio, pupils have been designing and making a Betty-style trundle toy, with a working cam that wags Betty’s tail as you pull her along. It was very impressive and very exciting! Trips and visits have also taken place across the school. Children in Year 4 have been involved in wire sculpture workshops and Year 6 have had a series of inspirational scientific visits to the Royal Institution https://www.rigb.org/whats-on. Make sure you look out for more information in recent newsletters, on Twitter and in this term’s school magazine, when it’s published. In assembly this week (Park on Monday) we spoke about being brave and courageous. Children were given a scenario - one of their good friends is being unkind, repeatedly, to someone else in the class. What would they do? There were 4 options - a) Do nothing and ignore it, b) Tell a grown up, c) Laugh at what your friend’s doing, or d) Tell them to stop. We all agreed, of course, that we’d tell them to stop and tell a grown up. But how easy is that, when it’s one of your best friends? Actually, it’s really difficult. And that’s why being brave and showing courage is so important. There are times when we all need to be brave and stand up for what’s right, even when it feels a bit scary. We then listened to the story of the brave young soldier who volunteered to deliver some very bad news to the king. The royal vet had discovered that the king’s horse was dead and was just too scared to tell the king. She asked everyone to help, but no one would, until the young soldier stepped forward. She agreed to help and went to see the king. See if your child can retell the story. Was the king popular and friendly? Why were people so worried about breaking bad news to him? How did the soldier tell the king? Was she worried? How does the story end? Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. Enjoy the weekend. David Worrall

As part of our push to make Hillyfield a greener school, we now have clothes and shoes recycling banks at the Hill and Park! The bins are located near the entrance to the Hill site office and in the Nursery playground at the Park site. Clothes that end up in landfill contain various toxins. When these decompose, they produce greenhouse gases such as methane which contributes to global warming. By donating your clothes, you’re reducing the size of landfill and therefore the levels of pollution. Please make sure donations are placed in sealed bags.

It seems that, each day, many of us are eating too much sugar. You may be surprised to discover the amount of sugar you are eating and how quickly the added sugar many of us consume can build up during the day. Parents can now install a new app onto their smartphone which is able to read the barcodes on many food products giving them a visual representation of the amount of sugar a product contains. It is hoped this can help reduce tooth cavities, weight problems and type 2 diabetes and encourage families to have more healthy options within their daily diet. News from Year 2

Last week, Year 2 became bakers and made their own bread rolls. Our topic this half term is ‘How does our food get to our fork?’. This helped us see how our food ends up on our plates. Our bread rolls smelled delicious and tasted even better!

A group of our parents from Hillyfield will run a festive jumper swap ahead of Christmas Jumper Day this year. Each year families buy new festive jumpers for the fundraising event and often ones that children have now outgrown go to waste. The aim of the project is to recycle festive jumpers as opposed to buying new ones and for money to go directly to the charity instead of to retail stores. If you have any freshly washed and good quality festive jumpers at home that you would be willing to donate, please drop them to school this week. Jumpers can be dropped into the large plastic boxes outside the main school office. The last day for dropping jumpers will be Wednesday 30th November. Jumpers will then be organised into sizes and will be made available to families on a stall in the playground after school on Thursday 1st December. All that’s asked is that if you take a festive jumper for your child, you make a donation to the Save the Children UK charity.

MFL Lead Learners Cinema Trip

On Wednesday, students from Year 3-6 attended the “Into Film Festivals“ screening of Petit Vampire. The trip was for students who have shown a keen interest in language or speak French at home. Petit Vampire was a French film about A friendship between a never-aging 10-year-old vampire and an orphan schoolboy, however a moon-headed monster throws obstacles in their path. The film was entirely in French with English subtitles. One year 3 student stated, “Wow this is so cool, I have learnt so many new French words!” while a student in year 5 said, “I can’t wait to watch more films in French so that I can learn more!”

Restoration of the Columbia Market Gates On Wednesday, children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 learnt about the history of Columbia Market and the restoration of its gates. Fox, Nicola and Emily from Proud Places told us the impressive story of what, in Victorian times, was the Grand Columbia Market. Sadly, the beautiful building was misused and demolished years after and the gates were the only witnesses of what once was a place of envy to the rest of the city. On the same day, children in Year 4 got a glimpse of the hard work of a blacksmith and created a wire sculpture inspired by the decorations the blacksmiths in that time created for the columns of the gates. On Thursday, some lucky children from Year 4 were invited to participate in the launch of the newly restored market gates. They had the opportunity to share their artwork and to gain first-hand insight into the restoration process. An impressive opportunity for children to learn about local history. Hillyfield will collaborate in more projects with Proud Places and The Heritage of London Trust to bring more local history, more creativity and more excitement! We are looking forward to tell you more about it!

Now in its fourth year, the Big Youth Conversation aims to collect the thoughts of young people aged 11-25 who live, study, play or work in the borough, through a series of surveys, events and focus groups. This year, Waltham Forest has opened a new hub for primary schools and we attended the Walthamstow Town Hall for the first ever Primary School’s meeting. The ideas and opinions collected through the Big Youth Conversation help the Council to create and improve services which directly impact young people and other residents. It has been an amazing experience! We now will discuss with Mr Worrall and Mrs Casbolt about starting a School Council team for our voices to be heard in the school and beyond more than ever! Betty’s Blog Hello everyone! I started the week off by Joining the Park site for their Monday morning assembly. I sat at the back with the teachers and looked to see which children were doing their best listening. In the assembly Mrs Casbolt spoke to everyone about their responsibility to keep the playground clean and tidy. There was a big pile of jumpers which had been found left outside, a few coats and even lunchboxes. Sometimes when I spot these things outside I try to help by moving them, but If I see tissues or food packaging, I can end up eating them, which can result in me having a poorly tummy. Please don’t leave those things on the floor. I do hate feeling ruff! Over at the Hill site this week, I joined Sophie, Nazariy and Ilyas, Miss Witter was very proud of their 100% attendance. Ilyas read a whole chapter of his book to me. I did such good listening and then gave them a little licking, to show my appreciation. Afterwards we had op-paw-tunity to play ball together. We had a fur-tastic time and the children all had big smiles on their faces. Betty
