Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

Commemoration of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Behold your king comes to you, O Zion, meek and lowly, sitting upon an ass. Ride on in the cause of truth and for the sake of justice. Your throne is the throne of God, it endures for ever; and the sceptre of your kingdom is a righteous sceptre. You have loved righteousness and hated evil. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows. Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you and also with you. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, during Lent we have been preparing by works of love and self-sacrifice for the celebration of our Lord’s death and resurrection. Today we come together to begin this solemn celebration in union with the Church throughout the world. Christ enters his own city to complete his work as our Saviour, to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us go with him in faith and love, so that, united with him in his sufferings, we may share his risen life. The people hold up palms or branches while this prayer is said by the president God our Saviour, whose Son Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem as Messiah to suffer and to die; let these palms be for us signs of his victory and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Holy Gospel St. Matthew 21. 1 - 11

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ When they had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, “The Lord needs them.” And he will send them immediately.’ Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, ‘Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’ When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, ‘Who is this?’  The crowds were saying, ‘This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.’ This is the Gospel of the Lord Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ Let us go forth, praising Jesus our Messiah. Hymn 238 Ride on, ride on, in majesty! Hark! all the tribes hosanna cry. O Saviour meek, pursue Thy road, With palms and scattered garments strowed. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. O Christ, Thy triumphs now begin O'er captive death and conquered sin. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! The angel armies of the sky Look down with sad and wondering eyes To see the approaching Sacrifice. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! Thy last and fiercest strife is nigh; The Father on His sapphire throne Expects His own anointed Son. Ride on, ride on, in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. Bow Thy meek head to mortal pain. Then take, O Christ, Thy power and reign. H. H. Milman (1791 - 1868) Melody, W. H. Havergal (1793 - 1870) Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

Let us pray for a closer union with Christ in his suffering and in his glory.

The Collect of Palm Sunday Almighty and everlasting God, who in your tender love towards the human race sent your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross: grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word The First Reading Isaiah 50.4–9a A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The servant of the LORD said: 4 The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens – wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. 5 The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backwards. 6 I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. 7 The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; 8 he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. 9 It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

Psalm 31. 9 - 16 Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble; my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my neighbours, a dismay to those of my acquaintance; when they see me in the street they avoid me. I am forgotten like the dead, out of mind; I am as useless as a broken pot.   For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; they put their heads together against me they plot to take away my life. Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

But as for me, I have trusted in you, O Lord. I have said, ‘You are my God. My times are in your hand; rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. Make your face to shine upon your servant, and in your lovingkindness save me.’

The Second Reading Philippians 2. 5 - 11 A reading from the letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. This is the word of the Lord Thanks be to God

The Gradual Hymn 237 O my Saviour, lifted, from the earth for me, Draw me, in Thy mercy, Nearer unto Thee. Speed these lagging footsteps, melt this heart of ice, As I scan the marvels of thy sacrifice. Lift my earthbound longings, Fix them, Lord, above; Draw me with the magnet Of Thy mighty love. Lord, Thine arms are stretching, Ever far and wide, To enfold Thy children To Thy loving side. And I come, O Jesus; Dare I turn away? No! Thy love hath conquered, And I come today. Bringing all my burdens, Sorrow, sin, and care, At Thy feet I lay them, And I leave them there. Words: William W. How, 1876. Music: Timothy R. Matthews, 1862 Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

The Passion Reading Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. Christ humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and given him the name that is above every name. Praise to you, O Christ, King of eternal glory. The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

maker of heaven and

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of God’s People For Christian people, that through the suffering of disunity there may grow a rich union in Christ, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

For those who make laws, interpret them, and administer them, that our common life may be ordered in justice and mercy, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those who still make Jerusalem a battleground, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those who have the courage and honesty to work openly for justice and peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those in the darkness and agony of isolation, that they may find support and encouragement, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those who, weighed down with hardship, failure, or sorrow, feel that God is far from them, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. For those who are tempted to give up the way of the cross, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy. That we, with those who have died in faith, may find mercy in the day of Christ, let us pray to the Lord. All Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, have mercy upon us.

The Peace Now in union with Christ Jesus you who were once far off have been brought near through the shedding of Christ’s blood; for he is our peace. The Peace of the Lord be always with you And also with you

The Offertory Hymn Hymn 231 My song is love unknown, my Saviour's love to me, love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be. O who am I that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh and die? He came from his blest throne salvation to bestow, but men made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know. But O my friend, my friend indeed, who at my need, his life did spend. Sometimes they strew his way, and his strong praises sing, resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then "Crucify!" is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine: never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine. This is my friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Samuel Crossman (1624 - 1683) Love Unknown, John Ireland (1879 - 1962)

Celebrating at the Lord’s Table At the Preparation of the Table Jesus, true vine and bread of life, ever giving yourself that the world might live, let us share your death and passion: make us perfect in your love. Until the kingdom of God comes let us celebrate this feast.

The Taking of the Bread and Wine Blessed are you, Lord, God of the universe, you bring forth bread from the earth. Blessed be God for ever. Blessed are you, Lord, God of the universe, you create the fruit of the vine. Blessed be God for ever.

The Great Thanksgiving The Lord is here His Spirit is with us Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God It is right to give Him thanks and praise Father, almighty and everliving God, at all times and in all places it is right to give you thanks and praise: Through Jesus Christ our Saviour, who, for the redemption of the world, humbled himself to death on the cross; that, being lifted up from the earth, he might draw all people to himself: And so with all your people, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and saying: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

Blessed are you, Father, the creator and sustainer of all things; you made us in your own image, male and female you created us; even when we turned away from you, you never ceased to care for us, but in your love and mercy you freed us from the slavery of sin, giving your only begotten Son to become man and suffer death on the cross to redeem us: He made there the one complete and all-sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world: he instituted, and in his holy Gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again. On the night that he was betrayed he took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way, after supper he took the cup; and when he had given thanks to you, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you, for this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Therefore, Father, with this bread and this cup we do as Christ your Son commanded: we remember his passion and death, we celebrate his resurrection and ascension, and we look for the coming of his kingdom. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer The Breaking of the Bread The bread which we break is a sharing in the body of Christ. We being many are one body, for we all share in the one bread.

Agnus Dei Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. Kilmocomogue Union of Parishes ~ The Sixth Sunday in Lent (Palm Sunday)

The Giving of the Bread and Wine Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God, who has taken away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Post Communion Hymn Hymn 217 All glory, laud, and honour To Thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. Thou art the King of Israel Thou David's royal Son Who in the Lord's name comest The King and Blessed One The company of angels Are praising Thee on high, And mortal men and all things Created make reply. The people of the Hebrews With palms before Thee went Our praise and love and anthems Before Thee we present To Thee, before Thy Passion, They sang their hymns of praise; To Thee, now high exalted, Our melody we raise. Thou didst accept their praises; Accept the prayers we bring, Who in all good delightest, Thou good and gracious King. St. Theodulph of Orleans, c. 821 John M. Neale, 1854

Going out as God’s People Post Communion Prayers Lord Jesus Christ, you humbled yourself in taking the form of a servant and in obedience died on the cross for our salvation: give us the mind to follow you and to proclaim you as Lord and King, to the glory of God the Father. Amen Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.
