Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church is a Catholic community invigorated by the Word of God and the Eucharist. We are committed to: Celebrating the Liturgy and the Sacraments with renewed spirit; Nurturing our children, youths and adults in our Catholic faith; Proclaiming our love of God through social justice outreach, stewardship and parish ministries. We welcome all to grow with us in living the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT

PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, If God gives us the gift of humility, it is easy to see how broken and needy each one of us is. If we are to grow in our prayer life and in charity, we must face the profound truth of the terrible reality of our sin, our weakness. “Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord? Or may stand in His holy place? One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean …” Psalm 24:3-4 God never abandons us! He comes to us in His son. Jesus comes to us and embraces us with all our joys and miseries! “Mary … will bear a son and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins …” Matthew 1:20-21 Monsignor Lorenzo Miranda
“Awake, mankind! For your sake God has become man. You would have suffered eternal death, had He not been born in time. Never would you have been freed from sinful flesh, had He not taken on Himself the likeness of sinful flesh. You would never have returned to life, had He not shared your death … celebrate!” - St. Augustine
Now four candles will light the “Advent wreath” on our way to Christmas. When you light these four candles on the last Sunday, we think of it, the Virgin, your mother and our mother. Nobody expected you with more anxiety, more tenderness, more love. No one greeted you with more joy. You will sow her like the grain of wheat is sown in the furrow. In His hands you will find the most beautiful crib. We also want to give ourselves as well: in faith, in love and at work each day. Come quickly, Lord! Come to save us!

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER NO CLASSES No meetings during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays for the Little Saints Club, Special Needs, Elementary grades 1-5, Adventure Club and Junior High grades 6, 7 and 8. Classes will be closed Sunday, December 25, Monday, December 26, Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2. DID YOU KNOW? Little Saints Club meets on Sundays from 11:00am-12:30pm for children 3 years through 5 year olds. Classes run September through May. Registration is open all year. The focus of The Little Saints Club is children’s Faith Formation —the process by which young children come to know God who is within them. This fun-filled class provides children a time to be with others their own age and learn the Gospel and our Catholic traditions in a way that is age-appropriate. They are introduced to the Bible and learn about the many stories of the colorful characters that are a part of our faith tradition. The children play, pray, do crafts, have music and enjoy snack together. Give your little ones a jumpstart on their faith formation as they learn about God’s wonderful world!
FAITH BUILDING OPT OUT OF THE CHRISTMAS CRAZINESS Catholics eagerly anticipate Christmas as a holy day, but the practical aspects of holiday preparations can rob us of the peace we want to enjoy. Try these suggestions for managing the Christmas Craziness: Plan perfection. Write down your idea of a perfect holiday. List everything: food, events, gifts. Is it reasonable? If so, your plan can proceed. If not, seeing it in black and white can help you pare down your expectations. Shrink your shopping list. Focus on giving to loved ones and opt out of gifting at work or to casual friends. Cook ahead. Don’t spend the holidays cooking and baking when you would rather be with those you love. Prepare simple dishes that you can prepare ahead and freeze. Decorate slowly. Advent is a quiet time of anticipation. Wait to put up Christmas decorations during Christmas Week or decorate a little at a time to build anticipation. Push back. Feeling pressured to have a particular kind of holiday? Decide what is best for you and stick to it. Growing in faith, November 2016, Copyright 2016 Success Publishing & Media, LLC

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Pokémon Go stops could lead kids to dangerous places With the popular game Pokémon Go, kids can interact with virtual game components in real-life locations. Some features of the game can present serious dangers for children using the app and interacting with other gamers. “PokéStops” – locations in which players can collect Pokémon – can be anywhere, and recently, one was reported to be at the entrance of a rehabilitation center that housed sex offenders. Parents should be aware of the game’s features and monitor children’s use to ensure that any Pokémon collecting is done safely. Saint Anthony of Padua
San Antonio de Padua
Saint Anthony was born Fernando Martins in Lisbon, Portugal. He was born into a wealthy family and by the age of fifteen asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, the then capital of Portugal. During his time in the Abbey, he learned theology and Latin and was ordained to the priesthood.
Fernando eventually received permission to leave the Abbey so he could join the new Franciscan Order. When he was admitted, he changed his name to Anthony. He was assigned to the hermitage of San Paolo after local friars considered his health. Anthony spent his time praying and studying. News of his eloquence reached Francis of Assisi, who held a strong distrust of the brotherhood's commitment to a life of poverty. However, in Anthony, he found a friend. Anthony occasionally taught at the universities of Montpellier and Toulouse in southern France, but he performed best in the role of a preacher. So simple and resounding was his teaching of the Catholic Faith, most unlettered and the innocent could understand his messages. It is for this reason he was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XII in 1946. He was only 36-years-old when he died and was canonized less than one year afterward by Pope Gregory IX. catholic.org

¡celebra! - St. Augustine
¡Ven, a salvarnos!

Decorar poco a poco. Dear Parishioners, Thanks to your generosity, our blood drive on Sunday, November 13, was a big success. We collected 29 units of blood from 39 people who were screened for donating. This is a 74% completion rate which is very good according to the Red Cross staff. The Red Cross staff also told us that our blood drive was the most organized they have ever seen. Many thanks to all the ministries who helped make it organized, successful and fun. Cheers to the Women's Guild, Liturgical Ministries, Teen Confirmation Program, Hispanic Ministry, School Parents, Rectory Staff and Religious Ed Program. We look forward to a bigger and better drive next Fall! Paula Mayfield Women's Guild Blood Drive Sponsor
