PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we witness the spectacle of this year’s presidential election, it is easy to despair or become depressed by the extreme negativity that we see. It is in these moments in life, when we must find the gift of prayer, and live it. The peace and the strength that we find in prayer are infinitely greater than all the negativity of this world. “Will not God secure the rights of His chosen ones who call out to Him day and night?” Luke 18:7 In our journey of life, as we go about all our activity, it is very common to see that the first casualty in our lives is prayer, personal or community. It is then that the dark side of life grows and the light seems to flicker. We must ask for the gift of prayer! “Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth …” Psalm 121:2 Prayer leads us to reject hatred and embrace compassion. Saints of God, teach us to pray! FAITH BUILDING SEEING WITH NEW EYES It’s easy to be nice to people who are nice to you or who are considered “respectable” company. Don’t be fooled by outward appearances, though. Everything done to our brothers and sisters Jesus counts as done to Him. When you see someone you want to avoid, remember he or she is Christ in disguise and act accordingly.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN AVOID "FIXING" AND TRY TO LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND Sometimes adults may have a tendency to try and fix problems that come up with their children. While the instinct to help and the loving concern behind it is understandable, it is not always the best course of action if the child is not learning something about how to handle a problem at least partly on their own. For some problems, children just need a good listener; for others they need guidance and help discerning how best to respond. Try asking questions, encouraging solutions, and praying with and for the child. Saint Brigid was born in the year 451. Her mother, Brocca, was a Christian baptized by Saint Patrick, and her father, Dubthach, was a Leinster chieftain. Her mother was a slave, therefore Brigid was born into slavery.

Many stories of Brigid's purity followed her childhood. She was unable to keep from feeding the poor and healing them. When she was about ten-years-old, Brigid was returned to her father's home, as he was her legal master. Her charity did not end when she left her mother, and she donated his possessions to anyone who asked.
After being freed, Brigid returned to her mother, who was in charge of a Druid's dairy. Brigid took over and often gave away milk, but the dairy prospered despite the charitable practice, and the Druid eventually freed Brocca. Brigid then returned to Dubthach, who had arranged for her to marry a bard. She refused and made a vow to always be chaste.
Legend has it Brigid prayed that her beauty be taken so no one would want to marry her, and the prayer was granted. It was not until after she made her final vows that her beauty was restored. At age 40, she founded a monastery in Kildare, called the Church of the Oak. Brigid and seven friends organized communal consecrated religious life for women in Ireland and she founded two monastic institutions, one for men and one for women. She later founded a school of art that included metalwork and illumination. Saint Brigid helped many people in her lifetime, but on February 1, 525, she passed away of natural causes. catholic.org

No. 10: You Can’t Fix Them, But You Can…”

Please deposit the envelope in the collection basket. To honor your loved ones the envelopes will be kept at the altar throughout the month of November.
Here are some tips to help you get ready for donating. • Eat a healthy diet. Continue or adjust your diet so that you are getting a healthy level of iron in your meals. • Check www.redcrossblood.org/iron-rich foods to find out which foods you can eat to ensure you are getting the proper food and amounts before you donate blood. • Drink plenty of fluids before you donate. Please do not consider coffee as a fluid as it causes you to eliminate fluids. Check with your doctor if you are on fluid restrictions. • Make a list of the medications you currently take and bring the list with you to your blood donation appointment. • Make certain you have a valid ID.
