PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Liguori Publications and wanted to share it with you.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE? The Isaiah quote in today’s Gospel about preparing the way of the Lord reminds me of what happens in a city when the president or the pope visits. Long-standing potholes are filled. Buildings in disrepair are spruced up and the “riff-raff” (aka homeless people) cleared away. Everything is smoothed out, fluffed up and brightened to impress. The same happens at our workplaces – the CEO arrives, and desks are instantly clean and the office productive. John the Baptist was the “voice of one crying out in the desert,” challenging people to prepare the way of the Lord. But this preparation wasn’t literally about smoothing roads and filling valleys. It was about repenting and preparing one’s heart to welcome the Lord – which is exactly what Advent is about. “Every valley shall be filled.” What are the gaping valleys in our hearts? What do we need to be more full of? Trust? Hope? Generosity? “Every mountain and hill shall be made low.” What do we need less of? Pride? Selfishness? Anger? “The winding roads shall be made straight.” What paths have led us from God? “The rough ways made smooth …” What personality bumps need smoothing? A judgmental attitude? An intense need for control? The desire to be the center of attention? We don’t prepare our hearts for the Lord out of fear or to make a good impression (as we do for residents and popes). We prepare them so God can live in us and transform us into the holy people we’re called to be. As St. Paul declares, “The one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it …” Prepare the way, and God will do the rest.

SPECIAL COLLECTION RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS DECEMBER 12 AND 13 WHY WE ASK YOU TO HELP Skyrocketing Costs There are more than 33,000 religious past age 70 living in the United States. In 2014, the average annual cost for their care was over $40,000 per person. For each of the last six years, the total cost to support women and men religious has exceeded $1 billion. Insufficient Income Over the last 30 years, the number of religious needing care has risen sharply while the number able to serve in compensated ministry has steadily declined. In 2014, 66 percent of the religious communities providing data to the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) had a median age of 70 or higher. For most of their lives, elder religious worked for small stipends. There were no 401(k) plans or pensions. Religious communities are financially autonomous and solely responsible for the support and care of all members. Income, earnings, and expenses are managed separately from the parish and diocesan structures of the Catholic Church. The average annual Social Security benefit for a religious is $6,048, while the average U.S. beneficiary receives $15,936. HOW THE RFR MAKES A DIFFERENCE Generous Donations and Careful Stewardship Over the last 25 years, Catholics in the United States have donated $755 million to the RFR. Over 93 percent of donations to the RFR aid elder religious, with 7 percent used for administration. Financial and Consultative Support Since 1989, nearly $634 million has been distributed to support the day-to-day care of elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. An additional $84 million has been allocated toward self-help projects initiated by religious communities, including collaborative health-care facilities and comprehensive retirement planning. In 2009, the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) implemented a new process to help religious communities that are critically underfunded for retirement address their funding shortfalls. Since then, the NRRO has helped 104 communities develop long-range retirement strategies. Data on women and men religious obtained from the NRRO database of participating religious institutes as of December 31, 2014.

New Pastoral Council Members Please welcome our new members to the Pastoral Council: Vicky Carnevale, Julie Showalter, and Devin Cornaire. Thank you for saying "Yes, Lord!" and for being "The Voice" of the people of God. Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing! It's Advent once again! The main thing this season is PREPARATION for the birthday and the second coming of our Savior. Please join us in the Advent Penance Service at St. Raymond Church on Tuesday, December 15 at 7 pm. "It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Advent!" We are so blessed to have "hard-serving" parishioners who helped to put up a beautiful "Advent and Christmas environment." Thank you for all your hard work, precious time, talent, sacrifice, and the love you show to our church. You make us proud! "Small Things Are The Big Things" We appreciate the little things you do in helping us take good care of our church and keeping it clean. Like arranging the song book, missalette, pew card, and song sheet before leaving church. Also making sure we don't litter on the floor both in church and bathrooms. We are all in this together to make OLPH "Clean and Green!" Thank you! Big December Events We are celebrating The Immaculate Conception on December 8! She is our special Mother "conceived without sin." Join us in celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12. She is "La Virgen de las Americas" (The Virgin of the Americas). In her honor, we will have Novena masses before the feast day and be enriched by the Marian homilies Fr. Pako will share with us. We will also celebrate Simbang Gabi on December 18 at 7 pm. The theme: "Jesus our Savior, Empower our Families to be Better Stewards of your Creation." The Filipino and Hispanic communities will serve us in this event "with the heart". "The Holy Year of Mercy" Pope Francis declared a Holy Year of Mercy which starts on the Solemnity of The Immaculate Conception, December 8. Let's reach out to others and share God’s mercy and forgiveness especially in this world we live in that's full of anger, hate, and violence. "Darkness can be dispelled not by darkness but by light." (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Thanks a Lotz! It's with deep sadness to tell you that The Lotz couple, Mychal and Theresa, will be saying "Sayonara!" December is the last month they will be sharing their "cool, jazzy, Church music" at the 5 pm Sunday mass. Thank you also to the rest of the band, who served faithfully with the Lotz! James Yoshizawa, our "Big Drummer Boy". And of course, "The Dynamic Duo!" Jasmine and Crystal Nguyen. "Life is a constant change" but God will always be there for us. He never changes! Amy Brent, our music tzar, is on top of this! "God luck" to your plans, Mychal, Theresa, James, Jazz, and Crystal! We salute you! We lost a great servant-leader a couple of weeks ago, Police Officer Ricardo "Rick" Gálvez. "Thank you for having dedicated your life to serve us." Let's pray for his bereaved family. "Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." “ LPH with a HEART” (N Eldon Tanner) Fr. Joseph

Many of us look forward to Christmas all year but let Advent pass unnoticed. It can be difficult for this quiet season to compete with the lights, the joy, the excitement, and the preparations for Christmas. This year, why not use the whole season of Advent to prepare for Christmas? Look beyond what your eyes can see to focus on your inner preparations.
Keep watch. Jesus is coming. We know this because we celebrate his coming every Christmas. He will also come again in glory but we don’t know when that will be. Advent reminds us to always be prepared for the coming of Christ. “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” (Matthew 3:3) Give the gift of yourself. Prepare the one gift for Jesus that He truly wants: YOU. He thought each of us was worth love and His life. To Him, we are a gift from the Father (John 17:24). Prepare yourself during Advent so can offer the very best — your love. Break down barriers. Let go of anything that stands between you and your faith. Perhaps you have a bad habit or a companion who is a poor influence. Take this opportunity during Advent to make things right. Ridding yourself of opportunities for sin will help you be ready to greet the Savior when he comes. Clean house. Just as you would clean your home to prepare for an honored guest, clean your soul of sin through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Remember to forgive those who have hurt you, too. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10, RSV). KIDS CORNER
SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN SHOP SAFELY THIS CHRISTMAS If you let your kids go to the mall by themselves to buy Christmas presents, you should talk to them about potential dangers they need to guard against. Christmas is the busiest time of year for commercial retail, which means that malls and shopping centers will be more crowded, and younger kids and teens who are alone may be a target for kidnappers and other dangers. Talk to your children about being aware of their surroundings, and where to go for help. Be in contact with them while they’re shopping, and have a check-in place and time set if you’re splitting up. For more information please visit: http:// safety.more4kids.info/186/shopping-with-kids/. For more information, call our Parish Contact Theresa Nicholas at 562) 862-7268.
