PASTOR’S COLUMN Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I saw this reflection in Bringing Home the Word published by Liguori Publications and wanted to share it with you. SECULAR “ADVENT” Today begins the Christian Advent season, but secular “Advent” began before Halloween, when stores hung Christmas decorations and encouraged us to buy our gifts early. Secular Advent is bright, cheery and vibrant, while Christian Advent is more serious and reflective – dark colors, quiet music, and some somber readings. Today we hear more about the end times. Advent isn’t only about Jesus’ coming at Christmas – it’s also about His coming at the end of time. The descriptions of the end -times signs are dramatic and frightening. However, Jesus claims that at the exact time these terrifying things are happening, our redemption is near. The moment things look the worst is also the moment salvation and hope are closest. That may seem hard to believe when you’re living with terror or fear. But look at Mary, who found herself an unwed mother in a culture that sometimes executed such women. She must have felt terrified, but hope and redemption entered the world through her pregnancy and Jesus’ birth. When Jesus died on the cross, all hope seemed lost, but through His suffering came life for the world. God draws nearest, bringing salvation, when we experience moments of hopelessness and despair. Secular Advent declares everything to be happy and joyful, but sadness, anxiety and fear don’t instantly disappear just because the holly and wreaths are out. Jesus reminds us to stay awake for God’s healing actions precisely when we feel most hopeless or anxious. God moves in unexpected ways and will be found where we least expect – in our most broken places.

First Sunday of Advent

Liturgical Enhancements for In this holy season of Advent, we are reminded to stop and reflect upon, anticipate and prepare for the miraculous moment when God became human, entering into the history of the world in a way that brings transformation and new life. (Sourcebook 2016). The environment, music, and movements of this liturgical season are meant awaken to our bodies so that we might become what we celebrate. The colors in the church banners are a bluer shade of violet, the color of royalty that is distinct from the royal color of purple that is used in Lent. The Advent wreath in the corner of our sanctuary, is a family devotion that is incorporated into our worship space. Each of the four candles reminds us of the coming of Christ. The fire from the candles reminds us and draws us to reflect on Christ, our light. Our entrance song for these four Sundays of Advent is “ Ready the Way of the Lord” by Bob Hurd. Listen to the words that we sing in the refrain, “Here is your God!,” as the Book of the Gospels is brought in procession. In the Theology of the Lector, Dr. Paul Turner writes, “The Book of the Gospels represents Christ ….. carried in procession and placed at the altar. The words of Jesus (God) are set on the altar of Jesus.” How does that speak to you? How does it change how you reverence the Book of the Gospels? Take time this Advent to enter into the songs selected for our Liturgies, as well as entering into the silence and stillness. Remember to keep stillness and reflection – in the quiet time before the Mass, and after the readings and Communion.

FIRST FRIDAY This Friday, December 4 is the First Friday of the month. Mass will be at 8:15 am and Eucharistic Adoration will be continuous from after Morning Mass until Benediction at 5:30 pm. We invite you to sign-up for ½ hour visits with our Eucharistic Lord.

Prayers for Our Beloved Muslim Brethren As we pray for all the people who were killed in the Paris attacks, I believe, we too should pray for the members of the Islamic State. That God will enlighten them. Our dear Lord prayed on the cross for his enemies, "Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing." Let us also do the same. We pray too for all the Muslims who are themselves persecuted, discriminated against, and are living in unimaginable poverty especially in Europe. They are also our brothers. Thank you for our Church Improvements! We owe you, dear People of God, for all these improvements we now enjoy. In particular, our parking lot, the trellises, the lights, the monument sign, and landscaping. We would never have had all these without your financial support. Kudos to you guys and of course, to Fr. Mark! Please do continue to support our church. Remember, we need to take good care of the goose that lays the golden eggs! A Super Crazy And Exciting December Ahead! The month of December will be packed with a lot of wonderful surprises! Please join us as we hold a Novena of Masses in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe. That means "nine days of masses" that will give us the chance to show our love for God and our Virgen de Guadalupe. Fr. Pako will share with us many wonderful things about La Virgen de las Americas in his homilies. On December 8, we will also celebrate several masses in honor of the Immaculate Conception, our Blessed Mother who was conceived without a blemish of sin to be a worthy vessel for her Son Jesus, our Savior. On Friday, December 18, at 7 pm, we shall celebrate our Simbang Gabi. This will be a fitting preparation for us for the birthday of Jesus. Please pray we will have a lovely weather that day. Begin with the End in Mind I believe the purpose of life is to serve. Please consider serving the People of God in whatever way you'd like. There will always be tasks to accomplish. And most of all, people who will need our help. On behalf of our community, I would like to thank all of our ministers serving us in one way or another. Thanks to our Ministers to the Sick who dedicate themselves in visiting and bringing Holy Communion to our brethren at the Downey Hospital, the facilities, and their homes. Thank you so much, our beloved Women's Guild, for all your wonderful contributions through the Sandwich Program and the scholarships for financially struggling students. Way to go! “

LPH with a HEART” Fr. Joseph

FAITH BUILDING THE ADVENT OF HOPE LUKE 21:25-28, 34-36 The virtues of patience and perseverance aren’t strengths for most of us. Often the concerns of daily life overshadow our pursuit of holiness. We can get lured into sin by the comforts and pleasures the world has to offer. We can forget our ultimate goal is Heaven. Knowing this, Jesus warned his followers about the end times, hoping to shake them (and us) out of “drowsy” complacency. Imagine the terrifying scene Jesus described – the shaking of the earth, sea, and sky and people dying of fright. In the midst of that terror, though, people living in God’s friendship will have no reasons to fear. The key is, he said, to stay on guard against sin and worldly pleasure. Advent is a time of waiting for the coming of Christ. God has promised us that if we are faithful to him, we will be rewarded. This is a time when we must pray for patience and perseverance to keep us ready for the arrival of our Savior. Then we can hold our heads high and stand confident expecting our promised reward.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN

CHRIST IS COMING AGAIN!

WHO SHOULD REPORT CHILD ABUSE?

At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Luke 21:27

Priests, deacons, school faculty and administrators and other staff members in our parishes and schools have been designated as mandated reporters under California law. When one of these persons receives information leading to a “reasonable suspicion” that a child is being abused or neglected, he or she must make a report to the appropriate child protection or law enforcement agency. However, every adult has a moral responsibility to report suspected child abuse. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “How to Familiarize Yourself with Policies and Procedures on Reporting Abuse,” email: jvienna@la archdiocese.org.
