Fourth Sunday of Advent December 18, 2016 (Ps 24 ) My Dear Sisters and Brothers: We invite every family to come and help us to decorate our Church and Family Life Center for the joyful celebration of Christmas. We need adults to join us on Thursday evening, December 22 (at 6:00 PM) to hang the fresh garland around the Church and to set up the Christmas Tree in the Narthex of the Church. Please bring any 8-foot or 10-foot ladders you may have. We invite adults, youth, and children to help us continue decorating our Church, tree, and Family Life Center for Christmas, make sure you bring a non-fragile Christmas Tree ornament to hang on our Parish Family Tree in the Narthex. Christopher Shackelford Reflection On the verge of Christmas, on the verge of the celebration of welcoming Christ into the world, the readings today focus on the virginity of Mary. Today’s homily can draw out the significance of what this says about us. Mary, after all, symbolizes the whole Church. She received Christ into her virginal body. The Church, too, as the Bride of Christ – and each of us individually – is called to a total fidelity which is symbolized by the virginity of Mary. In other words, whatever the vocation of each of us, this spiritual (if not physical) virginity means we have no Lord besides Jesus. We do not worship false gods or become intimate with other deities. As Mary welcomed Christ in her virginity, so does the Church. “It is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her,” the Gospel passage tells us. So can we say, “It is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in us,” and “It is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in the world.” No human effort brings about Christmas. But by our “virginal” fidelity, the Spirit brings him forth into the world through us. This is the “obedience of faith” of which Paul speaks in the second reading. And part of this virginal fidelity, part of this obedience of faith, is our commitment to be pro-life. “God is with us” means that he is on the side of every human life, against all that would destroy it. Sinceramente en Cristo, Padre, Christopher Shackelford Reflexión En vísperas de la Navidad, en vísperas de la celebración de bienvenida al mundo a Cristo, las lecturas de hoy se centran en la virginidad de María. La homilía del día señala la importancia de lo que esto dice sobre nosotros. Después de todo, María simboliza a toda la iglesia. Ella recibió a Cristo en su cuerpo virginal. También la iglesia, como esposa de Cristo (y cada uno de nosotros en forma individual) está llamada a una fidelidad total que se ve simbolizada mediante la virginidad de María. En otras palabras, cualquiera sea la vocación de cada uno de nosotros, esta virginidad espiritual (si no física) significa que no tenemos otro Señor más que Jesús. La Navidad no sucedió por obra del hombre. Pero mediante nuestra fidelidad "virginal", el Espíritu lo trae al mundo a través de nosotros. Esta es la "obediencia de la fe " de la que Pablo habla en la segunda lectura. Y parte de esta fidelidad virginal, parte de esta obediencia de la fe, es nuestro compromiso a ser pro-vida. May each Christmas )ind us more and more like him: more humble, more holy, more happy and more full of God. In the month of November, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to help the poor and suffering to face their hardships and fears, by assisting 172 families, spending $2,850 to stock our pantry which provided groceries for 753 people, and spending an additional $1,900 for utility bill assistance. Para aprovechar la tradición: Adornar el árbol de Navidad a lo largo de todo el Adviento, explicando a los niños cada simbolismo. Los niños pueden elaborar sus propias esferas (24 a 28, dependiendo de los días que tenga el Adviento) con una oración o un propósito en cada una. Conforme pasen los días, las van colgando en el árbol de Navidad hasta Nochebuena. Algo que no debes olvidar
