Page 2 Este fin de semana comenzamos una celebración anual de la comunidad de la parroquia de San Bartolomé. En 1917 el Padre William O'Shea fue nombrado por el arzobispo Mundelein para iniciar una nueva parroquia en la parte noroeste de Chicago. A menudo no recordamos, pero el mundo estaba de guerra, y los Estados Unidos comenzaban a involucrarse. Page 3 This weekend we begin a yearlong celebration of the community we know as St. Bartholomew Parish. In 1917 Fr. William O’Shea was appointed by Archbishop Mundelein to start a new parish on the Northwest side of Chicago. We don’t often think about it, but the World was at War, and the United States was just getting involved. By 1937, while the United States was totally in the grip of a financial depression, the parishioners built the church we know today. Typically, in Chicago, the Archdiocesan administration did not provide money to build a church; it all came from the community. So the family of St. Bart’s worked that out while living through the Great Depression. Our Community kept on growing, educating and worshipping together, while sending our young folks into WW II, The Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. Our parishioners have served our country in Grenada, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world. We continue to send people out to be nurses, doctors, teachers, laborers, police and firefighters. We have sent some of our youth to become priests, and nuns as well. Our community has brought literally thousands of people into the faith, seen them through Reconciliation, Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Holy Orders, and been there when our loved ones are ill through the Anointing of the sick. Finally, we have sent many of our loved ones back home by commending them to God. When you stop to think about it, that’s pretty impressive. I am always interested in why founding pastors choose their Patron Saint for a parish. Fr. O’Shea picked the Apostle Bartholomew (also known as Nathaniel.) In the Gospel for the Feast of Bartholomew, Jesus meets our Patron and right away says to his other followers… “This Man has No Guile”. In other words, he was a man with nothing hidden or underneath his public persona. That might be who we can aspire to become: To be exactly and precisely people of faith, nothing hidden. Bartholomew, went far afield after Christ’s Ascension. We understand that Bartholomew went as far as India and Armenia, preaching and teaching our faith. For his lack of guile and commitment to his faith he was flayed alive. Like the others who were known as Apostles he was martyred. The waypoint of 100 years as a community is a time to celebrate, but I am certain it is a time to reflect and renew ourselves in faith, and devotion to God, without reservation, without guile. I have a few ideas we might consider as we move through this great event. 1. Renew ourselves in the practice of our faith. Essentially, come to Mass regularly. Will it always be thrilling? Will the preaching always be exciting? Will the music always be inspirational? Probably not. But the fact that we gather together and pray together is a way to bond. God is present whether we’re in the mood to be present or not. God does not abandon us, it is us that give up. So perhaps be a regular at Mass, and work at participating, though it might cut into sleep time or a Sunday trip somewhere. 2. Get involved in parish life. You know St. Bart’s has all sorts of things we can do for each other. Did you know we have a chapter of St. Vincent DePaul Society? It helps people in direct need of food and such. Did you know we offer Religious Education to those who have special needs? We also have Religious Education for kids in public school, and that is a very large ministry indeed. Passing on the faith is a mandate of every pastor and indeed of all of us, if we intend to stay a community of faith. Join one of the other ministries, including the liturgical ministries or music, or the Men’s Club, Women’s Guild. Our own school has need of volunteers to assist where warranted. Maybe you can assist with the RCIA, the adult conversion process. 3. Come to the parish mission. Typically, we have a small percentage that come to these faith renewal opportunities. This year Fr. Michael Sparrow will be our retreat master. More details to come. 4. Find out more about our shared faith, Bible Study, or perhaps just a class on general information about our faith. Both Fr. Ric and Fr Tom would be more than willing to teach the faith! 5. Support our Priests, Deacon and Ministers as they work for your benefit. What does that mean? When they ask for help, please give some. When they preach, listen. When they need financial support, please give. Aside from everything else, I truly believe that our forebears had some good times together. well. Partying together, having fun is not bad and builds genuine friendships as well.

A year of Jubilee Celebration has begun with the opening Mass of thanksgiving this weekend, and we are joyful because we celebrate the roots of our faith as a community, as a family of God. The ministries that throughout this past “Century of Faith, Love and Devotion” that have supported our parish community with dedication, remembers its past, celebrates its present and hopes in its future, as we strive to remain a living and vibrant Parish in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Un año de Acción de Gracias ha comenzado con la Misa de Celebración del Jubileo este fin de semana, y estamos alegres porque celebramos las raíces de nuestra fe como comunidad, como familia de Dios. Los ministerios que a lo largo de este pasado "Siglo de fe, amor y devoción" ha apoyado a nuestra comunidad parroquial con dedicación recuerda su pasado, celebra su presente y espera en su futuro como nos esforzamos por seguir siendo una parroquia viva y vibrante en la Arquidiócesis de Chicago.

We have initiated a new century in which we will continue to embrace and live the faith that drew so many from different walks of life to this place a hundred years ago. We will continue to share the faith and carry it out anywhere we make our presence so that we may remain faithful witnesses of Jesus Christ through the teachings of our mother church, fully committed to live the sacramental life.

We move forward, imitating compassion, modeling reverence and following Jesus Christ in the ways of the Gospel. May Mary and Joseph, and our Patron Saint, St. Bartholomew always protect us and inspire us to never walk away from this beautiful faith which was handed out to us throughout the centuries.
