FROM FATHER TOM Who Established the Advent Season? Advent prayers and fasts existed since the early Church, but it was Pope Gregory the Great, about 600 AD, who established the four week liturgical season with its Masses, prayers and music for the Romans to prepare themselves for Christmas. Is the Advent Wreath Pagan? The origin dates to pre-Christian Germany and Scandinavia where people gathered to celebrate the return of the sun after the winter solstice. For us, the lighting of the Advent candles represents and reminds us of the promise of the coming of Jesus, the light of the world. Much time and effort goes into writing the bulletin each week. But, many parishioners do not read it. So I asked around for suggestions to increase readership. One strong suggestion was to make it easier to find the news one wants. Therefore, the pages are titled. It should cut the time in half to find what you wish to read. Debbie is open to your comments once you get use to the new format. Let her know what you think. The #1 item from the extensive survey, done before my time, was Communication. With your Parish Council representatives available for your concerns, and with a very good bulletin, hopefully Communication within the parish will be much improved. Part 1: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION ANOINTING OF THE SICK

Each of the seven sacraments, like other aspects of the Church’s pastoral plan, is an attempt to be faithful to the image of Christ we discover in the Gospels. Anointing of the sick is rooted in Jesus’ saving deeds of healing and even rescue from death. Often, it seems that Jesus would go at once to the person in a crowd who was in the most pain, in the deepest need. A man born blind, a little Roman girl beloved by her soldier father, a crippled man lowered from the rafters, and even a man who lost his ear to a swinging sword in the garden of agony. This list reads like an admissions chart in an emergency room, and perhaps that is the point. The whole human experience from childhood to old age, from sudden illness to chronic conditions, is represented by those for whom Jesus has such great compassion. We are a people of compassion for our sick, who reach out in tenderness to listen, to keep vigil, to strengthen, to touch with reverence, and to anoint with precious oil.

NOTAS DEL PADRE TOM Quien estableció el tiempo de Adviento? Oraciones de Adviento y ayunos existían desde la Iglesia primitiva, pero fue el Papa Gregorio el Grande, alrededor del año 600 dC, en que estableció el tiempo litúrgico con cuatro semanas de misas, oraciones y música para los romanos en preparación para la Navidad. ¿Es la Corona de Adviento Pagano? Fue originado en tiempos pre-cristiana en Alemania y los países escandinavos, donde las personas se reunieron para celebrar el regreso del sol después del solsticio de invierno. Para nosotros, el encendido de las velas de Adviento representa y nos recuerda la promesa de la venida de Jesús, la luz del mundo. Mucho tiempo y esfuerzo se toma en escribir el boletín cada semana. PRAYER SHAWLS TO BE BLESSED Next weekend after all the Masses Prayer Shawls will be blessed and on display. If you know of an ill person one will be given to you. These are prayed over as they are made and blessed to wrap the infirm person in healing prayer and the warmth of the shawl or blanket. The group of women meet on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00PM. Come spend an hour in fellowship, prayer and learn how to knit or crochet. They can teach you how, join us!

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY The Bereavement ministry is seeking members to join this beautiful ministry. Bereavement reaches out to families who are grieving and in pain. If you feel you might be interested in lending a helping hand, either by preparing food or serving at the receptions following a funeral mass, please contact a bereavement member after mass next week-end to sign up and join this ministry.
