LOVELY ADVENT DECORATIONS Thanks for the great group of volunteers who decorated the church with much planning and thought. The vases on the Tabernacle altar are empty, waiting with great longing to be filled with the light of Christ at Christmas. ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE In addition to the regular Saturday opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 3:30 to 4:30, there will be a special group Reconciliation Service followed by individual Confessions in Spanish and English. Get ready for Christmas - - - December 16, Tuesday at 7:00 PM. LA POSADA This beautiful prayer service remembers the journey of Mary and Joseph to register in Joseph’s home town of Bethlehem, the city of King David. They could not find room at the inn and were relegated to a stable where Jesus was born. It is often celebrated in various homes, but this year we will all celebrate it as a community in the church on one night - - - December 19, Friday at 6:00 PM. Come together for this prayer service and join in the Aquinas Center pot luck afterwards. (Also notice the remodeled kitchen which still awaits new flooring and painting. ANOINTING OF THE SICK At the 5:00 PM Mass on December 20, and at the 7:30 PM Spanish Mass there will be available this special sacrament for feeble and seriously sick. Those homebound parishioners have already been visited. For others who desire there will be a special blessing after all Masses. On behalf of the parish family we give thanks for our great cooks, Marti and Dan Reid. Their Thanksgiving dinner in the Aquinas Center was really appreciated, especially by older parishioners who could not travel for a family gathering. St. Thomas Aquinas provided that family, and delicious food – a banquet. Prepare the way of the Lord so at Christmas you will be ready to receive his love in all its fullness. Many blessings, Fr. Part 3: TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The purpose of anointing, however, was not simply healing, but forgiveness of sin and an experience of saving power of Christ. By the year 800, dioceses everywhere were organizing rituals for priestly anointing. Blessings and sprinkling of holy water, the singing of as many as seven psalms, penance, anointing of all the senses, viaticum, all capped off by the clothing of the sick person in penitential garments, were part of the rite. By the 1500s people made distinctions between visiting the sick, anointing, and viaticum. The attempt of the Church to be faithful to the image of a healing Christ has some complicated history, including centuries when the celebration was rare. Most sick people had no access to the rites at all; only monastics or the well‑off had much hope of this care. Today, those unhappy days are long behind us, and the care of the sick is an essential task in every parish’s life. As Christmas approaches almost everyone

comes in contact with someone who is a candidate for pastoral care. You live out the best of our tradition when you arrange for a sick person to receive Holy Communion or the sacrament of the sick and the consolation of regular contact with the faith community.

SERVICIO DE RECONCILIACIÓN DE ADVIENTO Además habrá la oportunidad para el Sacramento de la Reconciliación el sábado de las 3:30-4:30 PM, también habrá un Servicio especial de Reconciliación en grupo, seguido por las Confesiones individuales en Español e Inglés. ¡Prepárate para la Navidad el martes 16 de diciembre a las 7:00PM LA POSADA Este servicio de oración hermosa recuerda el viaje de María y José a registrarse en la ciudad natal de José de Belén, la ciudad del rey David. No pudieron encontrar habitación en la posada y fueron relegados a un establo donde nació Jesús. A menudo se celebra en varios hogares, pero este año todo se va a celebrar en comunidad en la iglesia en una sola noche El viernes, 19 de Diciembre, a las 6:00 PM. Acompáñenos a este servicio de oración y a disfrutar después a un “pot luck” en el Centro de Aquino. (Observe también que la cocina en su remodelación aún está en espera de un piso nuevo y la pintura.) UNCION DE LOS ENFERMOS En la Misa de las 5:00 PM el 20 de diciembre, y en la Misa de las 7:30 PM en español estará disponible este sacramento especial para los enfermos que están graves y débiles de salud.
