SOLID FAITH Today we hear Moses and the Lord Jesus summon their followers to listen attentively to their words. Moses reminds the people that a great blessing awaits those who obey the commandments of the Lord. Jesus tells his followers that those who listen to and act upon his words will be like the wise man who built his house on rock. Saint Paul recalls for us the central truth of our faith: that we have been justified freely by God’s grace through the redemption of Christ. In a society in which we are constantly bombarded with words, let us take the sacred words we hear today to heart. Young Adult Catholics Group: If you are in your 20’s, 30’s or early 40’s (married or single) and would like to join with your Catholic peers for fellowship and service, please take a flyer from the literature stand at the back of church (behind the last pews). Members of the group are usually at the back of the chapel after the 10:00 Mass. Wishing Well: Our parish helps support the maternity hospital in Chimbote, Peru. Lenten Longings: Something Different for Lent: You are invited to come to our parish's Lenten groups for six weeks during Lent to participate in Lenten Longings to read Scripture and share your faith. Small groups will be meeting once a week at the following locations starting the week of March 6th: Tuesdays at 2:30 pm and Fridays at 3:00 pm at the Farnsworth House Library, 90 South St., JP. We are considering a Saturday morning group at 10 a.m. if there are a few people interested. To participate, please call 617-524-0659, or drop in for one or more sessions. The Young Adults Group (20's to early 40's) will also have its own Lenten group. REGULACIONES DE CUARESMA

Lent is a period of special penitential observance. Following the instructions of the Holy See, the Bishops of the United States have declared that the obligation to fast and to abstain from meat still binds on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In this matter, the faithful enjoy freedom in conscience to excuse themselves but, as the Bishops state, “no Catholic Christian will lightly excuse himself from so hallowed an obligation” on these days. In addition, the tradition of abstinence from meat on the other Fridays of Lent is preserved. Again, the Bishops express their confidence that “no Catholic Christian will lightly hold himself excused from this penitential practice”.

La Cuaresma es un periodo de observancia penitencial. Siguiendo las instrucciones de la Santa Sede, los obispos de Estados Unidos han declarado que la obligación de ayunar y de abstenerse de comer carne todavía son observados el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. De esta forma, los fieles disfrutan de libertad de conciencia para disculparse a si mismo pero, como los obispos lo indican, "ningún Cristiano Católico se dispensará ligeramente de tan sagrada obligación" en estos días. Además, la tradición de abstinencia de comer carne en los otros Viernes de Cuaresma es preservada. De nuevo, los Obispos expresan su confianza que "ningún Cristiano Católico ligeramente se disculpara de esta practica penitencial". Con respecto a todos los otros días laborables de Cuaresma, nosotros recomendamos total participación en la Misa diaria y las observancias voluntarias de ayuno. Recomendable, particularmente durante la Cuaresma, es generosidad a local, nacional, y programas mundiales en compartir nuestra abundancia, la tradicional Cuaresma Devocional, y toda la abnegación resumieron en el concepto Cristiano de "mortificación". ABSTINENCIA: Todo Católico, de 14 años y mayor, está atado a las obligaciones de abstinencia. Abstinencia debe ser observada el Miércoles de Ceniza y los Viernes de Cuaresma. En los días de abstinencia, carne no debe ser consumida de ninguna forma. AYUNO: Todo Católico, de 18 años hasta los 60, están atados a la obligación de ayunar. Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo son días de ayuno. En estos días, solo una comida entera es permitida. Dos otras comidas sin carne, suficiente para mantener fuerza, pueden ser tomadas según las necesidades de cada persona, pero juntas no deben igualar otra comida entera. Comer entre horas no es permitido, pero líquidos, incluyendo leche y jugos de frutas son permitidos.

Regarding all the other weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and the voluntary observances of fasting. Commendable, particularly during Lent, is generosity to local, national, and world programs of sharing our abundance, the traditional Lenten Devotions, and all the self-denial summed up in Christian concept of ‘mortification’. ABSTINENCE: Every Catholic, age 14 and older, is bound to the obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all. FAST: Every Catholic, from age 18 until age 60, is bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting.\ On these days, only one full meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each ones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.
