It is intriguing to see that the apostles have to ask Jesus to teach them to pray, when looking at this gospel first glance. But we realize that it is the example of prayer that Jesus gives which stirs in them the desire to learn to pray. We would have given the apostles some “technique” to get in touch with God. But Jesus prefers to teach by example, and it is by seeing Him pray that the apostles decide to be initiated into a different form of prayer than that traditionally taught in the synagogue. This has a two-fold consequence: first, today’s gospel will be useful inasmuch as we are ready to “learn” to pray, to deepen our prayer. Second—and this is a constant in the gospel—it is the Christian’s example that will motivate others to action.

No deja de intrigarnos que sean los apóstoles los que tengan que pedir a Jesús que les enseñe a orar, cuando leemos el evangelio a primera vista. En cambio, vemos que es el ejemplo de oración de Jesús el que va a crear la inquietud en los apóstoles de aprender a orar. A nosotros se nos hubiera ocurrido enseñar a los apóstoles una técnica para ponerse en contacto con Dios. Sin embargo, Jesús prefiere dar ejemplo, y es viéndolo orar a Él que los apóstoles deciden ser iniciados en una oración distinta de aquella que quizás les habían enseñado tradicionalmente en la sinagoga. Este hecho tiene dos consecuencias: la primera es que el evangelio de hoy nos va a ser útil en la medida en que nosotros estemos dispuestos a “aprender” a orar, a profundizar en la oración. La segunda, que es una cosntante en el evangelio, es que el ejemplo del cristiano debe ser el aquél que motive a los demás a actuar.

Tradition says he traveled to the Iberian Peninsula to spread the gospel and is buried there. He is the patron of Spain. The works of mercy / Las obras de misericordia Addressing the participants of the plenary session of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Pope Francis said: “And when, in the evening of life, we are asked if we have given food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty, we will also be asked if we have helped people to overcome their doubts; if we have committed ourselves to welcome sinners, warning them or correcting them; if we have been able to fight ignorance, especially the one concerning the Christian faith and the good life.” Following are some ideas for you:
