Gift of Salvation By Cynthia Reyes Great News! Mother Teresa will finally be canonized a Saint on September 4, 2016. Apparently, even with all the acts of great love and charity, she was put to the test of having to account for two miracles to her name after her death. I don’t know about you, but for me she was a living saint. She accepted her role as servant as she saw God in the many faces of whom she served, even though it took her to places that seemed as though God had abandoned her. She too had her doubts just as Jesus uttered on the cross, “My, God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Once I asked a group of adults, “Does God love Mother Teresa more than you?” With perplexed looks scribbled on their faces, they seemed to respond in unison, “Yes!” God loved Mother Teresa more. Wrong answer I said! The God that created you and I is the same God that created Mother Teresa. God loves all his children equally. He didn’t offer to die on the cross exclusively for Mother Teresa, but he offered his ultimate sacrifice for you and I as well. Salvation is offered to all of us indeed! In today’s gospel we are reminded that we do not only follow Christ when it’s convenient and easy to do so, but that a true disciple walks the journey that often takes us to places that challenge us, just as in Mother Teresa’s life. The only difference between her and us is that she chose salvation by serving others. She did so even if she faced the worse obstacles and in face of adversity. We are called to do the same without leaving our homes and going to a foreign land. We are called to serve in our every day ordinary lives. To enter the narrow door seems to rather indicate that we must do things right, not only when they are easier. That may mean not to cheat in a game, not to deceive our spouse, our boss; not to take advantage of the weakness of others for our own benefit, to tell the truth always, defend the weakest, and avoid all forms of selfishness. By doing so, we can achieve our salvation without worry! We all can be saints if we choose to follow him!
