The Holy One of God

hat makes a person, a thing or even God, himself, ―holy‖? The word ―holy‖ comes to us from Old English and German origins from words pertaining to health or wholeness; things that were not to be violated. The word can be found in various expressions and is the root of many words: ―holiday‖ is literally a ―holy day‖ and originally only referred to religious feast days; ―halibut‖ seems to come from two words, ―holy‖ and ―butte‖ (a word for a flatfish), being a fish eaten on ―holy‖ Fridays. The word ―Sacred‖ comes from Latin origins and is used with the word ―holy‖ to describe things pertaining to God. Its ancient meaning referred to the binding, restricting, enclosing or protecting of something which is why one‘s ‗sacred oath‘ is still considered binding on a level deeper than a promise. The Church has referred to things, people and events as holy or sacred because they are set apart as pertaining to God or for God‘s use alone. Our church buildings are considered sacred space because they are the places where God‘s People gather to celebrate the Sacraments and the Sacraments are holy because God, Himself, becomes present in a special way through the actions of the priests and God‘s holy people.

hings that are holy are often set up in contrast to things that are considered profane. The word ―profane‖ is derived from two Latin words

that mean ―before or outside of the temple‖ and so profane words, objects or actions are those things that are not worthy of being in God‘s presence.

I

n today‘s Gospel, Jesus is referred to as the ―Holy One of God‖. This description presents Jesus as the pattern by which all holy things are measured. As members of the Body of Christ, bound together by Jesus‘ sacrifice, we become the Holy Ones of God, called to be set apart from the world even as we strive to serve the world just as Jesus did. As we reflect this month on Jesus, our Refuge, we call on the Holy One of God to keep us holy and to shelter us from what would take us from the path of holiness.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service states that nearly 46 million people visit national wildlife refuges every year. We recognize these refuges as a national treasure. These refuges are home to more than 700 species of birds, 220 species of mammals, 250 reptile and amphibian species and more than 200 species of fish. 59 refuges have been established for the primary purpose of conserving threatened or endangered species. These are fixed places in the geography of the planet. In this promise of refuge Jesus assures us of his protection and presence. That‘s the fixed place where we belong! For Reflection and Journal Writing  Where in my inner map, my map of my soul, can I plan a refuge with Jesus in the Center? Can I draw it in my Journal?  In what way is my parish a refuge for me … for others?  How do I describe feeling safe and protected?

El Santo de Dios

Qué hace a una persona, una cosa o incluso a Dios mismo, ―santo‖? La palabra ―santo‖ nos viene de orígenes antiguos del ingles y el alemán, de palabras relacionadas con salud o integridad; cosas que no estaban siendo violadas. La palabra puede ser encontrada en varias expresiones y es la raíz de muchas palabras: ―holiday‖ literalmente es un ―día santo‖ y originalmente se refería solamente a días de fiestas religiosas; ―halibut‖ parece que viene de dos palabras, ―santo‖ y ―colina‖ (una palabra de un pez plano), es un pescado que se come en Viernes ―Santo‖. La palabra ―Sagrado‖ es de origen latín y es usada con la palabra ―santo‖ para describir cosas pertenecientes a Dios. Su antiguo significado se refería a la unión, la restricción, encerrando o protegiendo de algo por un juramento sagrado todavía es considerado unión en un nivel más profundo que una promesa. La iglesia se ha referido a cosas, personas y eventos como santo o sagrado ya que se distinguen como pertenecientes a Dios o para el uso solo de Dios. Nuestro edificio de la iglesia es considerado espacio sagrado porque son lugares donde el pueblo de Dios se reúne para celebrar los Sacramento y los Sacramentos son santos porque Dios, Mismo, se hace presente de una manera especial a través de las acciones de los sacerdotes y el pueblo santo de Dios.

Como miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, unidos por el sacrificio de Jesús, nos convertimos Santos de Dios, llamados a ser apartados del mundo así como nos esforzamos por servir al mundo como Jesús lo hizo. Al reflexionar este mes en Jesús, nuestro refugio, hacemos un llamado al Santo de Dios para mantenernos santos y refugiarnos de lo que nos llevaría al camino de la santidad.

Los Servicios de los Pez y Fauna de los Estados Unidos afirma que cerca de 46 millones de personas visitan los refugios cada año. Reconocemos estos refugios como un tesoro nacional. Estos refugios casa de más de 700 especies diferentes de pájaros, 220 especies de reptiles y anfibios y mas de 200 especies de peces. 59 refugios se han establecido con el propósito principal de la conservación de especies amenazadas o en peligro de extinción. Estos son lugares fijos en la geografía del planeta. En esta promesa de refugio Jesús nos asegura su protección y presencia. Ese es el lugar fijo donde pertenecen. Para Reflexionar y Escribir en su Diario  ¿Cuando en mi mapa interno, el mapa de mi alma, puedo planear un refugio con Jesús en el centro? ¿Puedo dibujarlo en mi Diario?  ¿De que manera es mi parroquia un refugio para mi… para otros?  ¿Cómo puedo describir sensación de seguridad y protegido?

EL ESPIRITU DEL MAL LE TEME A DIOS. Por Humberto Beltrán

Cuentan que había una vez un señor se fue de cacería con su hijo, y el papá le dice a su hijo: ―Hijo tengo dos animales peleando dentro de mi‖ y el hijo le pregunta: ―¿Quién crees que gane?‖ Y él le dice: ―El que yo alimente más‖. Nosotros tenemos el bien y el mal dentro de nosotros, y depende del que nosotros alimentemos más ese es el que nos va a dominar, y la mejor forma de vencer el mal es apoyándonos de Jesús. Porque si lo hacemos a un lado entonces estaremos apoyando al mal. El evangelio de hoy nos presenta la lucha abierta de Jesús contra el espíritu del mal. Hay muchos espectadores gente curiosa y gente que tiene fe. Jesús, con la fuerza de su palabra, vence el espíritu malo y el hombre queda liberado. Con este gesto, Jesús quiere decirnos que vino a darnos la libertad espiritual. El espíritu del mal sigue caminando también en nuestros tiempos, por nuestras calles y ciudades. Y la misma lucha entre el bien y el mal se repite a diario en cada uno de nosotros.

¿Estamos Preparados para Enfrentarnos al Mal? El espíritu del mal tiene miedo de Dios. Desde el cuerpo del endemoniado grita: ―Viene a destruirnos‖. Muchos tenemos miedo de cambiar, miedo a suprimir ciertas diversiones. A veces tenemos miedo a orar y a oír la palabra de Dios que pide conversión. Nos incomodamos cuando alguien nos habla del bien, con su palabra o ejemplo. Algo que es impresionante en este pasaje del evangelio es el interés del Señor por la persona. Es sensible a la agonía de todos los que sufren alguna forma de opresión. Al libertar al endemoniado, nos indica que quiere liberarnos de toda opresión creada por el mal. Trae la liberación para las víctimas del odio, la guerra, el crimen, la ambición política o económica, las doctrinas falsas. Proclama para todos la liberación del espíritu. La humanidad, aunque pobre o enfermo, ésta llamado a tener libertad y a sentir alegría, a ser el mismo y no esclavo de otros.

¿Tenemos Abierto Nuestro Corazón para Recibir a Jesús? Los espectadores reaccionaron ante el poder del Señor con admiración> ―Es una enseñanza completamente nueva, en espíritu de autoridad‖. Es que no es tan solo un hombre el que habla, es Dios. Y ante esa autoridad nadie puede quedar indiferente. Porque él llega al fondo de la conciencia y sacude el corazón. No nos trae una liberación solo de palabra, como charlatán barato, sino una liberación de hecho. No solo se compadece del endemoniado o le da un buen consejo o una palmada en la espalda, sino que saca la cara por él y se enfrenta al enemigo con toda autoridad. Por eso la gente ve en el gesto de Jesús la presencia de Dios. Cuando Dios ordena al espíritu malo que salga, éste sale y huye. Mientras nosotros queramos, Dios esta con nosotros para ayudarnos a vencer el mal y evitar que se apodere de nuestro cuerpo. Quizá se nos presente como una persona que nos brinda apoyo y amor cuando sufrimos.

Reflexión Cuando oímos la palabra de Dios en las misas es para librarnos del mal. Viene a arrancarnos el espíritu del egoísmo, a limpiarnos del odio y a darnos un espíritu nuevo. Sigamos buscando las formas de alimentar al animal bueno que llevamos dentro de nosotros, para que el animal malo no prevalezca. La iglesia nos da muchas maneras de hacerlo, solo tenemos que informarnos.

DID YOU KNOW? Teaching kids to be safe around unfamiliar animals We‘ve all had the experience of someone else‘s dog approaching us. Uncertainty about the dog‘s intent can be frightening, especially to young children. The ASPCA website provides parents with advice on teaching their children to read a dog‘s body language and to identify signs that it wants to be left alone. The website also helps parents teach their children how to protect themselves from an overexcited pet by demonstrating the basics of dog bite prevention, such as rolling into a ball, protecting hands and face and calling for help, rather than running or screaming if chased by a dog. PROTEGIENDO NUESTROS NIÑOS Proteja a sus hijos de envenenamiento accidental Todos tenemos en casa cosas venenosas tal como fertilizante, anticongelante, medicamentos y maquillaje. Siguiendo algunas pautas de sentido común respecto a estos cosas, los padres pueden ayudar a evitar que los niños ingieran sustancias toxicas por accidente. Por ejemplo, guardar todos los medicamentos – recetados y sin receta — en un gabinete cerrado, lejos del alcance de los niños. Incluso las cosas que parecen inofensivos, como enjuague bucal, puede ser extremadamente peligroso si los niños lo ingieren en grandes cantidades. El hecho de que los gabinetes estén en alto no significa que los niños no pueden tener en sus manos lo que está dentro de los gabinetes – pueden subir (usando el inodoro o un mostrador) para llegar a las cosas en el cajón de las medicinas. WHAT ST. MARGARET MARY MEANS TO ME Mary Miller, soprano at 11 o’clock Mass Since 1979, with Father Joe Sartoris (now Bishop Joe) as St. Margaret Mary’s pastor and shepherd, St. Margaret Mary has served to be my religious, spiritual and choir-ministry home. At age 85, I continue to reap its benefits. We choir members, under the able leadership of our talented directors, are able to reach out and provide music ministry to all. “He who sings prays twice”; an added bonus indeed! St. Margaret Mary has been a source of many blessings for me and my deceased spouse Nick (a longtime member of the Holy Name Society): the camaraderie of fellow parishioners and the beautiful mix of cultures with their unique customs and food (as exemplified at our SMM funfilled fair and patio sales). My prayer is that St. Margaret Mary will continue to grow and enrich our community for years to come; as an outreaching and vibrant Catholic Christian Church. May we continue the mission of CHRIST with the fervor of faith, hope and love as we celebrate our 75th anniversary.

IN ST. MARGARET MARY HISTORY JANUARY 19, 1991—The Women’s Society hosted the first “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” event. JANUARY 21, 1962— The Holy Name Society sponsored their annual pancake breakfast. Cost was 75 cents per person or $3 for the entire family! Eggs were extra, however, at 2 for 25 cents. JANUARY 28, 1979—The parish announced the formation of a new ministry, which would come to be known as the Lazarus Society. These parishioners attended funerals as official representatives of the church. They would respond to the prayers at Mass and serve as pallbearers if needed. JANUARY 30, 1986—The Salesian Sisters, who staffed the school for 36 years, announced they would be leaving the parish at the end of the school year. JANUARY 31, 1982—A new Young Adult Group was formed, the Amicians, for all parishioners ages 18-35.
