Pastor’s Corner: Fr. Paul O’Donnell Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary’s, ith the visit of Pope Francis this past week, we in the United States have lived a great historical moment. And here in California we Catholics rejoice at the canonization of our new saint, Junipero Serra. Since Padre Serra has had such a big impact on our lives here, I thought it appropriate to share a few facts about his life.

e was born at Petra, on the island of Majorca, 24 November, 1713. He died at Monterey, California, on August 28, 1784, at the age of 70. In 1730, he entered the Franciscan Order. For his proficiency in studies he was appointed lector of philosophy even before his ordination to the priesthood. Later he received a Doctorate before embarking for the missions of Mexico (1749). While traveling on foot from Vera Cruz to the capital, he injured his leg in such a way that he suffered from it throughout his life, though he continued to make his journeys on foot whenever possible. t his own request he was assigned to the Sierra Gorda Indian Missions some thirty miles north of Querétaro. He served there for nine years as superior, learned the Otomi language of the Pame Indians, and translated the catechism. Recalled to Mexico City, he became famous as a preacher. While preaching, he would pound his breast with a stone! In 1767, he was appointed superior of the Indian Missions of Lower (Baja) California. Then 2 years later he led an expedition to Upper California. Arriving at San Diego he founded the first of 21 California missions which accomplished the conversions of all the natives on the coast as far as Sonoma in the north. hose directly established by Father Serra were San Carlos; San Antonio de Pala; San Gabriel; San Luis Obispo; San Francisco de Asis; San Juan Capistrano; Santa Clara; San Buenaventura. He was also present at the founding of Santa Barbara. All of this despite great struggles with civil administrators bent on infringing upon the Church’s freedom and indian rights. During the last 3 years of his life, despite his physical sufferings, he once more visited all the missions from San Diego to San Francisco—six hundred miles—in order to confirm all who had been previously baptized—5,309 persons! Serra was small of stature, had a sonorous voice, swarthy skin, dark hair and penetrating eyes. Besides extraordi-

nary fortitude, his most conspicuous virtues were insatiable zeal, mortification, absolute confidence in God and love for his people. e is buried in the mission of San Carlos which he himself founded. The esteem in which his memory is held may be gathered from the many Serra monuments dotting California’s Camino Real. The subject of many biographies, his own writings have been translated into several languages. He is known as the Apostle of California. Beatified by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1988, he was canonized by Pope Francis on September 23, 2015 during a Mass in Washington, DC. ere is an excerpt from the Holy Father’s homily: “Today we remember one of those witnesses who testified to the joy of the Gospel in these lands, Father Junípero Serra. He was the embodiment of “a Church which goes forth”, a Church which sets out to bring everywhere the reconciling tenderness of God. Junípero Serra left his native land and its way of life. He was excited about blazing trails, going forth to meet many people, learning and valuing their particular customs and ways of life. He learned how to bring to birth and nurture God’s life in the faces of everyone he met; he made them his brothers and sisters. Junípero sought to defend the dignity of the native community, to protect it from those who had mistreated and abused it... Father Serra had a motto which inspired his life and work, a saying [that above all] he lived his life by: Siempre adelante! Keep moving forward! For him, this was the way to continue experiencing the joy of the Gospel... He kept moving forward, because the Lord was waiting. He kept going, because his brothers and sisters were waiting. He kept going forward to the end of his life. Today, like him, may we be able to say: Forward! Let’s keep moving forward!”

Queridos Amigos y Familias de Santa Margarita María

on la visita del Papa Francisco la semana pasada, en los Estados Unidos hemos vivido un gran momento histórico. Aquí en California los católicos nos alegramos con la canonización de nuestro nuevo santo, Junípero Serra. Debido a que el Padre Serra ha tenido un gran impacto aquí en nuestras vidas, pensé que sería apropiado compartir algunos hechos acerca de su vida: nació en Petra, en la isla de Mallorca, el 24 de noviembre de 1713. Murió en Monterey, California, el 28 de agosto de 1784, a la edad de 70. En 1730, ingresó a la Orden Franciscana. Por su habilidad en los estudios fue nombrado lector de la filosofía, incluso antes de su ordenación sacerdotal. Más tarde recibió un doctorado antes de embarcarse para las misiones de México (1749). Mientras viajaba a pie desde Veracruz a la capital, se lesionó una pierna de tal manera que sufrió durante toda su vida, a pesar de eso continuó haciendo sus viajes a pie siempre como fuera posible. A petición propia fue asignado a las Misiones indígenas de Sierra Gorda a unas treinta millas al norte de Querétaro. Se desempeñó allí durante nueve años como superior, aprendió la lengua otomí de los indios Pame, y tradujo el catecismo. No olvidó a la Ciudad de México, se hizo famoso como predicador. Mientras predicaba, golpeaba su pecho con una piedra! En 1767, fue nombrado superior de las Misiones de la Indios de la Baja (Baja) California. Luego de 2 años después dirigió una expedición a la Alta California. Al llegar a San Diego fundó la primera de las 21 misiones de California, que lleva a cabo la conversión de todos los nativos de la costa hasta Sonoma, en el norte. Las misiones directamente establecidas por el padre Serra fueron San Carlos; San Antonio de Pala; San Gabriel; San Luis Obispo; San Francisco de Asís; San Juan Capistrano; Santa Clara; San Buenaventura. También estuvo presente en la fundación de Santa Bárbara. Todo esto a pesar de grandes luchas con los administradores civiles empeñados en infringir la libertad de la Iglesia y los derechos indígenas. Durante los últimos 3 años de su vida, a pesar de sus sufrimientos físicos, una vez más visitó todas las misiones de San Diego a San Francisco— seiscientas millas—con el fin de confirmar a todos los que habían sido bautizados—5309 personas— Serra era pequeño de estatura, tenía una voz sonora, de piel morena, cabello oscuro y ojos penetrantes. Además de extraordinaria fortaleza, sus virtudes más notables fueron el celo insaciable, la mortificación, la confianza absoluta en Dios y el amor por su pueblo. Está enterrado en la misión de San Carlos que él mismo fundó. El aprecio a su memoria puede

ser obtenida de los numerosos monumentos que Serra esparció en el Camino Real de California. El objeto de muchas biografías, sus propios escritos han sido traducidos a varios idiomas. Se le conoce como el Apóstol de California. Beatificado por el Papa San Juan Pablo II en 1988, fue canonizado por el Papa Francisco el 23 de septiembre 2015, durante una misa en Washington, DC. He aquí un extracto de la homilía del Santo Padre: “Hoy recordamos a uno de los testigos que declararon la alegría del Evangelio en estas tierras, el padre Junípero Serra. Él fue la encarnación de ‘una Iglesia que va adelante’, una Iglesia que se propone llevar a todas partes la ternura reconciliadora de Dios. Junípero Serra dejó su tierra natal y su forma de vida. Estaba entusiasmado abriendo caminos, yendo al encuentro de muchas personas, el aprendizaje y la valoración de sus costumbres y formas de vida particulares. Aprendió a llevar al nacimiento y nutrir la vida de Dios en los rostros de todos los que conocía; él les hizo a sus hermanos y hermanas. Junípero buscó defender la dignidad de la comunidad nativa, para protegerla de los que la habían maltratado y abusado… Padre Serra tenía un lema que inspiró su vida y obra, un dicho [por encima de todo] vivió su vida: ¡Siempre adelante! ¡Seguir avanzando! Para él, este era el camino a seguir experimentando la alegría del Evangelio... Siguió avanzando, porque el Señor estaba esperando. Él siguió su camino, porque sus hermanos y hermanas estaban esperando. Él siguió su camino hacia adelante hasta el final de su vida. Hoy en día, como él, nosotros podemos decir: ¡Adelante! ¡Sigamos avanzando!” San Junípero Serra, ¡ruega por nosotros!

I recall a game I played when I was a child called “king of the hill”. The object was to be the first kid to the top of a hill and then to keep the hill by pushing others off. The game sometimes got pretty physical, but it was all in good fun. We have an ingrained desire to compete—to be the best In the Gospel of Mark, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, asked Jesus to “Grant that in Your glory we may sit on at your right and the other at your left”. Simply put they, like us, just wanted to “be the best”. But Jesus turned their world upside down when He proclaimed “...Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant….” How does the Lord call you today to die to self, to be the servant of all? Reflection. Some say “I’m personally opposed to abortion and euthanasia, but can’t impose my views on others.” But laws don’t regulate “views”, they regulate behavior. Someone’s “view” may be that you should not be protected. But the law provides you that anyway. The unborn and elderly should enjoy the same protective benefit of the law, despite anyone’s “views”. La característica más notable de la moral farisaica es el legalismo. En cambio, la moral que propone Jesús es una moral de actitudes. Para transmitirla a sus discípulos, el evangelio narra dos episodios. El primero es una controversia con los fariseos sobre el divorcio, que favorecía entonces al varón y discriminaba a la mujer, considerada inferior y propiedad del marido. Jesús se sitúa en la perspectiva de Dios y recuerda el designio amoroso divino en el logro de una plenitud humana. El varón y la mujer son personas iguales; se unen en matrimonio por amor, no por interés. Al nivel de proyecto, el matrimonio es indisoluble; en la realidad práctica, debe regularse de algún modo el posible fracaso matrimonial. Lo que debe ser, a veces no puede ser, a causa de la dureza del corazón. El segundo episodio es un altercado en relación a unos niños llevados a Jesús para que sean bendecidos. En el fondo los discípulos piensan que los niños, los menores, no significan nada; el reino de Dios es para adultos, para personas fuertes, es decir, para los que hacen méritos, realizan obras y piensan ortodoxamente. Jesús, por el contrario, cree que con la actitud de un niño se recibe el reino. Divorcio, tema del día. Uno de los problemas más dolorosos en la familia es el divorcio. Muchos atraviesan cada día por esta experiencia y asumen las consecuencias. Vemos padres separados, hijos confundidos, tensiones, odios, frustraciones. Después de intentaren vano otros caminos de comprensión y unidad, cuando todo falla, se piensa en el divorcio como única solución. Muchos tienen posteriormente suerte y reorganizan sus vidas. Otros sufren por años la impresión de haberse equivocado. Detrás de esta salida que los casados hallan hoy, existe un problema muy fuerte: la falta de

unidad en la familia. Al casarse todos sueñan con la unidad y la comprensión. Al divorciarse saben que han fracasado. La ley civil abre un camino y acepta el divorcio. Pero nosotros debemos de preguntarle a nuestra conciencia y debemos preguntarle a Dios qué es lo que piensa sobre este problema. El evangelio de hoy nos puede iluminar. En tiempos del Señor, había el mismo problema familiar y la ley aceptaba el divorcio. Algunos enemigos del Señor quisieron tenderle una trampa y le preguntaron: ¿Puede un hombre divorciarse de su mujer? Jesús habla del plan de Dios al principio, y de la ley de los hombres. El plan de Dios presenta la imagen ideal: el permanecer unidos para siempre. La ley de los hombres presenta la realidad que vivimos: cuando la unidad es imposible, el hecho es que la pareja se separe. El plan de Dios permanecerá siempre como ideal, a pesar de que la realidad humana no sea así.

Reflexión Lo primero que Jesús pone en claro es lo sagrado del matrimonio. El matrimonio es sagrado porque ese fue el plan de Dios, desde el principio. Dios como un gran artista, dejó para el final de su obra lo más perfecto.

Women’s Society Invites you to ANIMAL STUFFING NIGHT This evening will be in memory of Elaine Holcomb who spearheaded this project for many years. Our Lady of Fatima Guild creates stuffed animals and donates them to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Children’s Ward. Guild members do the sewing, but need help with stuffing.
