New Mass Times at St. Monica Greetings to all! A few weeks ago I asked for some input about an upcoming change in Mass times here at St. Monica. I want to thank all of you for your input and appreciate your honesty and creative ideas. If you recall, the desire was for us to have six Masses, four in English and two in Spanish/bilingual, with an hour in between each Mass. In addition to being able to coordinate better with our cohort parishes of St. Michael and St. Gabriel, here is more detail on the reasons for the changes: 1) Only six Masses with an hour in between: This allows each of our priests to have only three Masses on a Sunday. Believe it or not, this is a requirement of the Church’s canon law (Canon 905). Priests may say up to three Masses on a Sunday but are not really supposed to say more than that. This allows us to celebrate Mass prayerfully and, quite frankly, with greater attentiveness to our community. Instead of burning through Mass in a hurry and get to the next one, we can really pray together as a community. Additionally, we can be a little more attentive to you when you might need to talk, receive the anointing of the sick, or ask a question after Mass. These were also reasons why I wanted to have an hour in between each Mass. 2) Four in English and two in Spanish: Based on my observation of the past five years I think our three English Sunday morning Masses could be combined into two Masses. Our Church seats 780 people and I feel that we are not sufficiently using that space in the morning. Two English Masses at 8:00am and 10:00am seems to be the schedule where we would have to sacrifice the least in terms of times. The change is an hour or less for all involved, and this was confirmed by many of your responses to the survey. We did not make huge changes to the Spanish Mass schedule. I originally had the idea to have a 2:00pm Mass after a 12:00pm but this was received pretty poorly. Fr. O’Mara at St. Gabriel will be offering two Spanish Masses every Sunday evening at 4 and 6 PM, so that will cover the Spanish-speaking Sunday evening crowd. I kept our Saturday evening Spanish Mass in hopes that an earlier start time might help increase attendance at this particular Mass. So, after looking through your hundreds of suggestions and praying a lot about this, I have decided that these will be the best Mass times to serve our parish and our local cohort of St. Monica, St. Michael, and St. Gabriel: 5:00pm Saturday English 7:00pm Saturday Spanish 8:00am Sunday 10:00am Sunday 12:00pm Sunday 6:00pm Sunday

Any Mass intentions that were originally scheduled for the Sunday 7:40 AM Mass after July 27 will be rescheduled to nearest available Mass time. St. V de P Warehouse Weekend St. Monica's turn to volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul distribution center is Saturday, July 26 from 8 AM to 12 PM. We NEED help! Summer vacations have drastically cut the number of helpers, making it difficult to serve the poor. Sunday School Registration Sunday school registration for 3 year old (August 2014) through 8th grade are being sent to families the first week of August who were previously in the program. If you are new and need a registration please e-mail [email protected] or call 253-2193 ex 4. We will send your a registration packet. Pre-school classes are limited in number. On site registration will be August 10, 17 and 24, 9:00 AM 11:45 AM and 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM. Registration will close on August 25! Sunday School begins September 7. We also need about 100 catechists and assistants. If you wish to volunteer please contact the Religious Education Office.

Many Volunteers Are Needed for the Parish Festival! The St. Monica Parish Festival is Saturday, August 23 following the 5:00 PM Mass. Please join us for great food--all food items are just $1—live music, fun and games and mores! Many volunteers are needed to make this day a success, and this year, thanks to the generosity of the St. Monica Knights of Columbus, all volunteers will receive a groovy t-shirt. Combine Prayer and Exercise with SoulCore at St. Monica! SoulCore is a 50-minute workout combining Pilates and stretches—all done while praying the rosary! A stretch or core-strengthening position is held for every Hail Mary, with a rest time between each decade to learn about the fruits of the mysteries of the most holy rosary. In a one-month trial run at St. Monica, participants found it to be “challenging,” “reflective” and “a great way to combine workout and prayer.” The workout is DVD-led—and free of charge! It’s held every Monday in the St. Augustine Room from 6-7 p.m. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a mat. No need to call to say you’re coming, but if you’d like more information, call Natalie Hoefer at 317-295-1697. Life Teen Volunteers Needed LifeTeen is currently seeking volunteers to help with this program in the fall. The volunteer positions include Core Team and Support. Core Team - helps plan weekly meetings, and acts as group leaders. Support - provides set-up, supervision, helps with activities outside of the weekly meeting (re-treats, social outings, snacks, service projects, etc.). All volunteers must attend the Safe and Sacred Training and submit to a background check. Who Are the Crossroads Kids And Why Do They Want to Talk to You? On July 26-27 St. Monica will host Crossroads (www.crossroadswalk.org), an organization of young adults who walk across America each summer to promote the pro-life cause. Our guest on that weekend will have walked from San Francisco to be here with us. After each Mass a Crossroads person will be in the Narthex to greet parishioners and then they will give a short talk about their work in the St. Augustine room. Please come and meet the next generation of pro-life leaders. They’ve come a long way to meet you. Also be aware that they will accept donations to support their trip.

6th Annual “Friends of the Poor” Walk/Run Raise money for St. Vincent de Paul with little time or effort at the 6th Annual “Friends of the Poor” Walk/Run, with DJ (weather permitting) and information stations along route. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry feeds 10,000 people/week, and the warehouse serves 25,000 people/year—all done by volunteers and donations! Nuevos Horarios de las Misas a Santa Mónica ¡Saludos a todos! Hace algunas semanas les pregunté su opinión acerca de los cambios de las Misas aquí en Santa Mónica. Quiero agradecer a todos por su opinión y aprecio su honestidad e ideas creativas. Si recuerda, el deseo de nosotros era tener seis Misas, cuatro en inglés y dos en español/bilingüe, con una hora entre Misa y Misa. En adición a estar disponible para coordinar mejor con nuestras parroquias del equipo cohorte de San Miguel y San Gabriel, aquí está la razón más detallada de la razón de los cambios: 1) Solamente seis Misas con una hora entre Misa y Misa: Esto le permite a cada uno de nuestros sacerdotes tener solamente tres Misas en domingo. Lo crea o no, este es un requisito de la Ley Canónica de la Iglesia (Canon 905). Los sacerdotes pueden decir hasta tres Misas en domingo pero en realidad se supone que no pueden decir más que esto. Esto nos permite celebrar la Misa con más devoción y, francamente, con mayor atención a nuestra comunidad. En lugar de celebrar la Misa y estar de prisa para llegar a la próxima Misa, podremos de verdad orar juntos como comunidad. Además, podremos estar más atentos cuando usted necesite hablar, recibir la unción de los enfermos o hacer cualquier pregunta después de la Misa. El cambio es una hora o menos para todos los que se 3)encuentren involucrados, y esto fue confirmado por muchas de sus respuestas en la encuesta. No hicimos grandes cambios en el horario de las Misas en español. Originalmente tuve la idea de tener una Misa a las 2:00pm después de la Misa de 12:00pm pero esto no fue muy bien aceptado. El Padre O’Mara en San Gabriel ofrecerá dos Misas en español los domingos por la tarde a las 4 y 6 PM, así que esto cubrirá a las personas de habla español. En verdad aprecio su paciencia y entendimiento en lo que nos adaptamos a los cambios. Empezaremos con estos nuevos horarios el fin de semana del 2 y 3 de agosto. Cualquier intención de la Misa que estaba originalmente programada para el domingo en la Misa de las 7:40 AM después del 27 de julio se cambiará al horario de la Misa más cercana disponible. 16º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Tres son las parábolas de Jesús que encontramos en la liturgia de este domingo. La del trigo y la cizaña, la del grano de mostaza y la de la levadura. Las tres sugieren que el Reino de Dios da fruto y crece siempre. Además nos da tiempo para crecer en la paciencia, la energía y el deseo de participar activamente en el Reino. El crecimiento requiere de proceso y ritmo. Notemos que los procesos personales y comunitarios tienen su ritmo y tiempo de crecimiento. También se nos dice que el Reino crece en todas partes, incluso en el mismo lugar donde el maligno siembra la maldad. Esto quiere decir que vivimos en una sociedad que conlleva el bien y el mal juntos. Por lo tanto, cabe que nos preguntemos: ¿sabemos distinguir el bien y el mal que la sociedad nos ofrece? ¿Qué métodos usamos para sembrar la semilla del bien? Es importante, pues, no dejarnos arrastrar por la corriente. Las tres parábolas subrayan lo importante que es el permanecer comprometidos a continuar en el seguimiento de Jesucristo; a no dejar de hacer el bien aunque sea dentro de circunstancias adversas donde aparentemente la injusticia triunfa. No olvidemos que el bien siempre triunfa sobre el mal, y la generosidad sobre el egoísmo. Ayudémonos, valorando y apoyando a las personas que luchan por hacer el bien. Pidamos al Señor en esta liturgia que nos dé la virtud de la paciencia para madurar y crecer como personas, agradecer y alabar la paciencia que Dios nos tiene y así pues aprender a ser pacientes con nuestros semejantes. ¡Todos necesitamos la sabiduría del tiempo! "El que tenga oídos, que oiga".

Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body of parishioners who assist the Pastor in guiding the parish on issues requiring practical wisdom and investigation. The PPC has three purposes: 1) to investigate pastoral matters; 2) to give these matters in-depth consideration and prayer; and 3) to propose practical conclusions and assist in cultivating our vision. Twelve parishioners discerned their participation on PPC for a threeyear term through June 30, 2015 related to the parish theme of “Immersed in Christ: One Body. One Mission.” The PPC meets the second Wednesday of the month. All parishioners are welcome to attend! The next meeting is August 13 from 6:45 PM to 9:15 PM in Holy Family Room.
