OLG Small Groups growing faith in circles Seven reasons why small, faith sharing groups that meet weekly in homes are important to Catholic Christians at OLG: 1. Jesus modeled small group ministry with the Apostles. 2. Meeting in the home is modeled by the early church. 3. Small groups give us a heightened sense of belonging to our church community and faith family. 4. Small groups help us grow and mature spiritually. 5. It’s a place to go to be known, loved, and cared for. 6. Forming bonds and deeper friendships with fellow Catholics helps faith to grow. 7. Small Groups are where Faith Formation occurs outside of our big Church. To join or for information, contact: Nick Rawe
[email protected] or David da Rosa (714) 788-8648. CHURCH "Church" in Greek means convocation, or assembly in Latin, because all are called to be members of it. --St. Isidore

Dates to Remember! The Ascension of the Lord: May 7 & 8 The solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord is transferred to and replaces the Seventh Sunday of Easter in the Diocese of Orange and in many archdioceses and dioceses of the United States. The Ascension will be celebrated May 7/8. Thursday, May 5, will be observed as an Easter weekday.
Solemnity of Pentecost.: May 14 & 15 Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples and also brings to a close our celebration of the Easter Season. Wear RED! Bishop Vann has delegated to parish pastors of our diocese the faculty for confirming adults on the solemnity of Pentecost. These are adults who were baptized Catholic but were never confirmed. On May 15 at the 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Masses, Fr. Ed will confirm these candidates who have completed their preparation for the sacrament through the Rite of Christian Initiation

The Ministers of Care need your help….. The Ministry of Care at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church has as its purpose uniting with the Lord's sacrifice and our community all those who are unable, due to illness or infirmity, to be present at Mass. Sent forth from the liturgy to bring Communion to the sick, the Ministers of Care represent Christ, and manifest faith and charity on behalf of our parish for its members who are ill. Our parish is blessed by the participation of so many in this important ministry of comfort and concern for our sick members. At this time, however, we are in need of additional ministers. If you would like to know more about becoming a part of this important ministry, please contact Denis Wilkins at (562) 760-5281, Kelly O'Rourke at (562) 694-1770 or Pauline McLachlan at (562)245-7713, or call the parish office at (562) 691-0533. We need both English and Spanish-speaking ministers.

Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir For the Fifth Sunday of Easter, the Gloria Dei Choir sings Edgar Bainton’s “And I Saw a New Heaven.” Bainton (1880-1956) studied composition with Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music and then served as professor of piano at the Newcastle Upon Tyne Conservatory. After a visit to Australia in 1930, Bainton was appointed director of the New South Wales Conservatorium; he resided in Australia from 1934 until his death. His compositions include a large body of symphonic and chamber music as well as three operas; while he composed little sacred choral music, he is remembered chiefly for his grand, evocative anthem “And I Saw a New Heaven,” which depicts vividly the vision of John as heard in today’s Second Reading from the Book of Revelation. Bainton’s music is being rediscovered by a new generation of Australian musicians, with numerous Bainton works now being recorded for the first time. During Communion, the choir sings Peter Nardone’s “I Give to You a New Commandment.” Nardone (b. 1965) is an accomplished organist, countertenor, composer, and conductor; he has sung with Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir and The Tallis Scholars and currently serves as Organist/ Director of Music at Worcester Cathedral and Artistic Director of the renowned Three Choirs Festival. In “I Give to You a New Commandment,” Nardone fashions an original melody for the women with the text of John 13:34 (“I give to you a new commandment: that you love one another as I have loved you”) to the Latin chant Ubi caritas sung by the men (“Where there is charity and love, God truly is there also”). —Kevin St. Clair, Interim Director, Gloria Dei Choir
