READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gal 1:6-12; Ps 111:1b-2, 7-9, 10c; Lk 10:25-37 Tuesday: Gal 1:13-24; Ps 139:1b-3, 13-15;Lk 10:38-42 Wednesday: Gal 2:1-2, 7-14; Ps 117:1bc, 2; Lk 11:1-4 Thursday: Gal 3:1-5; Lk 1:69-75; Lk 11:5-13 Friday: Gal 3:7-14; Ps 111:1b-6; Lk 11:15-26 Saturday: Gal 3:22-29; Ps 105:2-7; Lk 11:27-28 Sunday: 2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19

THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY “How long, O LORD?” (Habakkuk 1:2). With Habakkuk’s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life Sunday finds all life claiming sanctuary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk’s day, with ruin and misery, “destruction and violence, . . . strife and clamorous discord” (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we “unprofitable servants” cry with the apostles, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus’ reply might be paraphrased, “Not quantity—quality.” Next weekend marks the Jubilee Year of Mercy’s special devotion to Mary, whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to risk, and to dare to speak up for life.—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. A boy asks his father to use the car and the father replies “No, not until you cut your hair!” The boy replies, This weekend, October 1 and 2, a “But father… Jesus had long hair!” “Yeah,” said the father, representative from the Franciscans of “but Jesus walked everywhere.”

Mary will visit St. Agnes to introduce us to the Schools of Gratitude Program. “The desire of the Franciscans of Mary is to fill the world with people who live a relationship with God and their fellow man based on gratitude. We want the Lord, who is love itself, to be loved. This is why we call ourselves the Missionaries of Gratitude. But this evangelization cannot be achieved without our unity to the hierarchy of the church and to each other, and of course, without the divine intervention of God, since it is by His graces that our hearts are set aflame with love.” For more information: [email protected];

ST. AGNES ACADEMY NEWS School Mass

Growing Beyond Earth

At a recent School Mass, the entire school prayed together for one of our Kindergarten students who is currently fighting Medulloblastoma.

The Growing Beyond Earth challenge transforms our 6th grade science classroom into an extension of NASA’s greenhouse project. Our students will be testing different seeds (purple choi, emperor kale, shungiku and romaine lettuce) that may be considered as a source of food for the journey to Mars in the 2030’s. The seeds are growing under a photosynthetic light, simulating conditions inside the International Space Station. If you would like to follow our progress during the Growing Beyond Earth challenge visit Twitter and look for @stakbscience.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month In support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, 2nd grade students performed a dance, encouraging everyone to get involved in this good cause!

Golf Tournament Kindergarten Learning Fun Kindergarten students are having fun learning! They read If You Give a Pig a Pancake, and then made some pancakes as a snack. Also, while learning about the five senses, students looked through magazines and cut out pictures to paste in their “My Five Senses” flip books.

Piano Lab The St. Agnes music program includes piano lab for students in 1st to 8th grades. Individual piano lessons are also offered after school.

St. Agnes invites you to join us for an amazing day of golf, food and awards to benefit our school! The tournament will be held on Friday, October 14th, at Crandon Golf at Key Biscayne. Please log onto Blackboard for further information.

Christmas Bazaar The St. Agnes Christmas Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you are interested in participating as a vendor, please email us at: [email protected].

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, or RCIA, is the way adults over 18 yrs can become Catholic. RCIA is about Baptism (if you have never been baptized), adult First Communion, and/or Confirmation. It is your response to God's invitation to participate fully in the celebration of God's love and life through the Sacraments, including the Sacrament of marriage! To understand what Catholic RCIA is all about, it is important to understand the Sacraments and how they relate to your life. Whether you are a teenager or grandparent, this is your personal journey. It begins with a choice, and it ends with a choice. Plus, there are a number of smaller choices in between. The first choice is whether or not to start the Catholic RCIA process. Pray, read scripture, and listen to His call. Meetings are Mondays 7pm - 8:30 pm in the Pastoral Center. Our questions may be different. Our ability to understand may be different. For these reasons, and many others, the Church has a specific program to help. Email [email protected], or call Sr. Maria Andrea Oliver at 305-361-1378 to register or for more information. Classes start Monday, October 3.

OUR LADY OF MERCY CEMENTERIO CATOLICO
