COMPARTIR LA FE ES AMAR

As we hear the double command of love proclaimed in today’s Gospel, it is instructive to note the examples of concrete love of neighbor that were already present in the Old Testament. In the passage we read from Exodus, we are called to concern for the widow, the orphan and the alien: “If you ever wrong them and they cry out to me, I will sure hear their cry.” In addition to the commitment we need to have to take care of the bodily needs of our neediest brothers and sisters, through the corporal works of mercy, World Mission Sunday is a good day to consider that the most important way to show love is to share our faith in Christ, being for others what St. Paul tells the Christians of Thessalonica that they have been: “you became a model for all the believers … in every place your faith in God has gone forth.” Last Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI announced that a Year of Faith will begin on October 11, 2012, in celebration of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, and as a way to deepen our reflection on our faith in the God of Jesus Christ and to recommit ourselves to the New Evangelization. It seems very appropriate that the first year of classes at St. Juliana Catholic School, following the upcoming merger with Holy Name of Jesus Catholic School, will coincide with this Year of Faith. It will remind us that the most precious gift we have received and that we need to share with our children and our families is the gift of faith. (I invite you to read my letter to the St. Juliana School Community, appearing as an insert today. The questions and answers about the merger, referred to near the end of the letter, are available on the School website: www.saintjuliana.org). I ask you today to pray for our School and the Holy Name of Jesus School community. Pray that this merger may truly help us fulfill our mission to bring the faith to more of our young people. And pray, on this World Mission Sunday, that all of those who work to spread the Gospel, especially those who do it far from home and at much more cost to themselves than our own efforts, may be filled with blessings, and their work may be fruitful, to the glory of God.

Al oír el doble mandamiento de amor proclamado en el Evangelio de hoy, es instructivo fijarnos en los ejemplos del amor concreto del próximo que ya estaban presentes en el Antiguo Testamento. En el pasaje que leemos del Éxodo, se nos llama preocuparnos por la viuda, el huérfano y el extranjero: “Si los explotas y ellos claman a mí, ciertamente oiré yo su clamor”. Además del compromiso que debemos tener de cuidar de las necesidades materiales de nuestros hermanos y hermanas más necesitados, a través de las obras corporales de misericordia, la Jornada Mundial de las Misiones es un buen día para considerar que la forma más importante de mostrar el amor es compartiendo nuestra fe en Cristo, siendo para los demás lo que San Pablo les dice a los cristianos de Tesalónica que han sido: “han llegado a ser ejemplo para todos los creyentes … de ustedes partió y se ha difundido la palabra de Dios”. El domingo pasado, el Papa Benedicto XVI anunció que un Año de Fe comenzará el 11 de octubre de 2012, en celebración de la apertura del Concilio Vaticano II, y como manera de profundizar nuestra reflexión sobre nuestra fe en el Dios de Jesucristo y de comprometernos de nuevo a la Nueva Evangelización. Parece muy que el primer año escolar en la Escuela Santa Juliana, después de la consolidación con la Escuela Holy Name, coincidirá con este Año de Fe. Nos recordará que el regalo más precioso que hemos recibido que debemos compartir con nuestros niños y nuestras familias es el don de la fe. (Les invito a leer mi carta a la comunidad de la Escuela Santa Juliana [en inglés] insertada en el boletín hoy. Las preguntas sobre la consolidación, a las cuales la carta hace referencia, aparecen en www.saintjuliana.org). Les pido que recen por nuestra Escuela y por la comunidad de la Escuela Holy Name of Jesus. Office hours on that day for booking Masses are 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Please remember that you will be able to book only two Masses per family per year on weekends (Saturday Vigils or Sundays) or Holy Days of Obligation and as many as you want on weekdays. You are asked as well, to be patient and kind to the secretaries! Thank you!

Read the bulletin insert each week describing the changes in the Roman Missal in English. We are using the new sung Mass parts already; pay attention, and you’ll notice and learn them quickly! On Monday, November 14 (7-8:30 p.m.), and on Tuesday, November 15 (9:30-11 a.m.), we will offer a full practice run-through of the Mass, explaining some of the changes and letting you hear and say them all. Come to one of these two times! The First Sunday of Advent (the vigil Masses on Saturday, November 26), will be the first time to use the new Missal.
