Dear Families:

Queridas Familias:

Today, the biblical readings stress the danger of riches, a favorite theme of Luke. Why this particular emphasis from Luke? Because we see, from biblical times, down through history to the present day, how the unfettered pursuit of wealth damages society unraveling the bonds that tie communities together.

Today's gospel brings us a real case and a parable that clearly depicts this message. It brings to the fore the question of the meaning of life; a subject that is serious and always approached cautiously.

The meaning of life is distinct from what we might think of our “sense of life” - our awareness of the course of our existence, similar to the path that a stream takes, flowing down a mountain. The meaning of life is what ultimately justifies the hard journey through the “desert”; the hard work; the long hours of study; the fatigue; the hurly-burly of the marketplace; not to mention the struggling, suffering and dying, that is always taking place, somewhere. Christians affirm that Jesus gives meaning to our lives. And it is that awareness, rather than material acquisitions, which gives value to all our striving, sacrifice and accomplishment. Considerable reflection on this fact will be required, before things can change, significantly. Continuing with today’s topic, we might ask ourselves what should be done to convert material and cultural wealth to a balm that can soothe the terrible aches and pains - the wounds and afflictions - of humanity; to convert the miser's gold into bread that can nourish all of humanity. The man in the parable of the gospel thought he was smart, but he was really a fool, because he was only concerned with a temporary sensation, that would soon pass. He strove to secure his possessions, only to see them slip through his fingers. As we see in the second reading, we are invited to set our hearts on the eternal, and on the people in our lives. Even though they die, they will never end because life is everlasting. Love is an asset that can always be increased. The more we give love, the more we receive love, and the more we want to give, again. Paul invites us to place ourselves in God’s world, where we are, and always will be important, because the only value is love. Let us invest in the things that have no material value: friendship, prayer, contemplation of nature, reading, and family. This is how our lives will be richer. Finally, let us strip off the old human condition, with its works, and let us attain a new condition; in the image of the creator. With my blessings,

Father Celestino, Pastor

THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY, QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What is an indulgence? According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints. An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. The faithful can gain indulgences for themselves or apply them to the dead. (CCC 1471) The Jubilee Indulgence made available during the Jubilee Year of Mercy is a plenary indulgence, which means that it removes all the temporal punishment due to sin.

July 31 As the Gospel indicates, judgment can come at any moment; our opportunity to give life to others can cease at any moment. To whom will all this piled-up wealth go? In the Culture of Life, we are secure at every moment in knowing that we simply seek to give ourselves away, that others may live.

World Youth Day - Over 140 young pilgrims, chaperones, and priests, along with Bishop Frank J. Dewane, are traveling to Krakow, Poland from July 23 to August 2 to join Pope Francis for World Youth Day. Please keep these travelers in your prayers in the days leading up to their pilgrimage, for their trip overseas, during the pilgrimage and for safe return to the Diocese of Venice. May their trip bring them closer to God and Holy Mother Church as they pray with thousands of youth from across the globe.

Pray for kidnapped priest - Prayers are still needed for the safety and return of Father Tom Uzhunnialil, who was kidnapped in Yemen in March. Father Uzhunnalil, an Indian national, was abducted March 4 when four gunman attacked a Missionaries of Charity-run retirement home in Aden, Yemen, killing 16 people, including four Missionary Sisters of Charity. Since his kidnapping, a photo has appeared purportedly showing him in captivity, however, the authenticity of the image is unclear. Officials do believe Father Uzhunnialil is still alive. Please pray for Father Uzhunnialil and for the souls of those who were killed during the March 4 raid. 7
