Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 3, 2016

When Jesus invites you to walk with him, be prepared for what will happen. During this year of Luke we often find the life and ministry of Jesus described as a journey. Last Sunday’s gospel began with these words which tell us how determined Jesus was to make his way to the place of his passion and death. “When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him.” One commentator noted that the itinerary Jesus followed doesn’t make a lot of sense to someone who plans a trip carefully so as to take the shortest and most direct roads. It’s also clear that Jesus was not afraid to venture into unknown and even unfriendly territory. He encounters all kinds of people. He meets them, as we say, where they are. But he doesn’t leave there, without confronting them with an invitation, a summons really, to walk with him and with his disciples. And when we do walk with him, amazing things happen. I’m one of those people who plans ahead and leaves no detail to chance. When I design a trip (like the one I’m on right now in Brazil) I try to take the most direct routes. Wherever I go I do my best to make sure to know exactly what I will be doing and where I will be staying. I also don’t leave anything to chance. And I don’t like traveling alone, especially in foreign places. So I will share with you a little bit about my current journey, as a reflection on what I know I need to keep learning if I intend to walk with Jesus. Let me begin with the fact that when I decided to go to Brazil, I had two goals in mind. The first was to learn some basic Portuguese and to understand the people and culture of Brazil, to be a better priest and pastor for our Brazilian community. The second was then to do some sightseeing with my friend and classmate, Fr. George Morin. To determine where to stay and where to study took time and care and consultation. But in the end I knew I was venturing into strange territory. This would be a trust walk with the Lord and he didn’t let me down. Through the kind intervention of a Boston priest, I was welcomed by a fine group of Brazilian priests who inhabit the biggest urban ‘rectory’ I have ever experienced. Quite unlike the hostile or indifferent reception that we read about in last week’s gospel, I was made to feel at home among these priests who strove mightily to communicate with me. At times in frustrating and comical ways, we all used whatever language we could (Portuguese, English, Spanish or even Italian) to carry on a conversation about Brazil, the United States, and the church and the politics of both. Yes, I did learn some Portuguese there and in the classroom. But just as important, I learned once again to trust the mercy and kindness of God in those whom I met unexpectedly. I was wonderfully impressed by the deep and very expressive faith of the people I met. I will never forget my visit and Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Aparecida, the largest church in the world dedicated to Mary, and a place of pilgrimage for millions of Brazilians for whom she is their loving patroness. Wherever I went people came up to me asking for my blessing. I was very touched by their piety and renewed in the beauty of my vocation as a priest. It was a long, tortuous drive to Aparecida, but it was worth it. As I was approaching the end of my classes I was met with the bad news that my friend, Father George, would not be able to travel because of a sudden bladder infection and complications. So now I am preparing to venture away from my temporary home with priests in Rio and off alone into the jungles of Foz de Iguacu and the Amazon River. By the time you read this I will be somewhere on the Amazon, covered with insect repellant and faithfully following a regimen of malaria pills. But God has never let me down. In these strange and doubtless beautiful places there will be people who will become part of the journey. As soon as I disclose the fact that I am a priest, you can be sure that the conversation will take a new turn. This was the case with my teachers in Rio who had lots of questions about faith and priesthood and the church. All of them had some kind of Catholic connection but none practiced their faith. Suddenly there was a priest they not only could talk to; they had to! Being a priest opens lots of doors, especially in a Catholic country like Brazil. I saw this at the rectory of Our Lady of Copacabana. Soon there will be for me unforeseen opportunities to open doors for strangers who will be an unplanned part of the tours and the meals that await me on the remainder of my itinerary. It gives me pause both to be grateful to the Lord for his kindness and to be ready to bring faith into a conversation, into those seemingly random encounters that by the grace of the Holy Spirit turn strangers into sometime companions. I have no doubt that the Lord knows what he is doing. Like the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer that looks over the people of Rio (insert above), Jesus opens his arms to us and invites us to trust him enough to open our arms to others. He does so always inviting us to follow the path he opens up to us, which may not be exactly what we had planned.

God bless. Fr. John

Y no me gusta viajar solo, especialmente a lugares extranjeros.

Fr. João tínhamos planejado.

Feast Day of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish In the 9th Century, St. Thomas was assigned the feast day of December 21st. Fast forward to 1927 when Cardinal William O'Connell established a new parish, St. Thomas the Apostle, on the Peabody/Salem line and now fast forward to 1962 during the changes to our liturgical cycle and so as to avoid interference with Advent, St. Thomas's feast day was changed to July 3. This date is the same date that is noted in the St. Jerome Martyrology. The St. Jerome Martyrology is a list of Christian martyrs, one of the most used and influential of the Middle Ages which is also the oldest surviving general or "universal" martyrology, and the ultimate source of all later Western martyrologie.

St. Thomas Thrift Shop The Thrift Shop will be closed from Sunday, June 24th through Friday, July 8th. It will re-open on Saturday, July 9th. Please do not drop off any items during this time period as no one will be available to accept them.

St. Thomas Parish will celebrate this feast day with a collation following the 10:00AM Mass. Join us with great joy for our patron Saint, "Thomas" who, although remembered mostly for being absent from the Upper Room the first time Jesus appeared to His disciples, and needed proof of Jesus Resurrection, he is also the patron saint of Architects, builders and Masons.

Please remember Amelia M. Cody, Ralph W. Hussey, the deceased of our Parish and those who were buried from St. Thomas Parish during the past weeks. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

Vida do Apóstolo São Thomas/Tomé

Opening Doors of Mercy for our Homeless Neighbors.

Camp Carmelite - Summer Bible Camp Run by the Carmelite Sisters 5 Wheatland St. in Peabody July 25 - 29, 2016 and August 1-5, 2016 8:00AM to 1:00PM for children ages 4 years – 2nd Grade Bible Stories, Music, Games, Arts & Crafts & Snack

“Whatever you did for the least of my brothers, you did for me.” (Mt. 25:40 ) Dear parish friends,

Cost: $40.00 a day or $200.00 per week. Contact Sr. Kathy at 978-531-4733 or email @ [email protected] for a registration form. Space is limited.

Every Friday since January 8th, St. John's has opened our doors to feed and serve people who are homeless or otherwise marginalized in our community. It has been an incredible blessing of ministry to sit, talk, eat, and develop friendships each week with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Many volunteers have come forward to create a loving and caring environment, and all who come here to visit tell me they notice and feel the love from everyone. Truly it has been a most rewarding experience in such a short period of time, and the good Lord is smiling down upon all of our efforts indeed!

Respect for Life is the Path to Peace

"The path to the attainment of the common good and to peace is above all that of respect for human life in all its many aspects, beginning with its conception, through its development and up to its natural end. True peacemakers, then, are those who love, defend and promote human life in all its dimensions, personal, communitarian and transcendent. Life in its fullness is the height of peace. Anyone who loves peace cannot tolerate attacks and crimes against life.

In addition to providing a full lunch each Friday, we distribute fresh fruit, refreshments, and packaged wholesome snacks for them to enjoy on the weekend. This is an important extension of our ministry as Peabody does not have a soup kitchen open and available on Saturdays or Sundays. As well, the continuous needs for daily grooming supplies and personal items are tremendous. If you would like to help, the following items (marked for Friday lunch program) may be dropped off during the week at St. John's Parish Center or St. Thomas Spiritual Life Center. 1. Boxes of juice packs 2. Granola bars 3. Packages of peanut butter or cheese crackers 4. Yoohoo chocolate drink juice boxes and bottles of spring water 5. Small boxes of ready to eat chicken or tuna salad with crackers included 6. Breakfast bars 7. Pop tarts 8. Cans or bottles of Arizona (or other brand) lemon iced tea 9. Individual bottles of Gatorade 10. Individual packages of trail mix or cookies 11. New medium or large men's boxer briefs, boxers, or briefs only 12. White only crew socks, above the ankle 13. Gently used adult sneakers for men or women 14. New small or medium women's briefs 15. Any brand of deodorant, soap bars, shampoo, razors, shaving cream 16. Gently used baseball caps

"Those who insufficiently value human life and, in consequence, support among other things the liberalization of abortion, perhaps do not realize that in this way they are proposing the pursuit of a false peace. The flight from responsibility, which degrades human persons, and even more so the killing of a defenseless and innocent being, will never be able to produce happiness or peace. Indeed how could one claim to bring about peace, the integral development of peoples or even the protection of the environment without defending the life of those who are weakest, beginning with the unborn. Every offence against life, especially at its beginning, inevitably causes irreparable damage to development, peace and the environment. Neither is it just to introduce surreptitiously into legislation false rights or freedoms which, on the basis of a reductive and relativistic view of human beings and the clever use of ambiguous expressions aimed at promoting a supposed right to abortion and euthanasia, pose a threat to the fundamental right to life."

Thank you for your generosity! If you have any questions, please contact Pat Adam at 978-335-2080.

-- Pope Benedict XVI, Message for the Celebration of the World Day of Peace - January 1, 2013, n.4.

Will you sponsor a child? St. John the Baptist, St. Vincent de Paul Society

Every school year St. John School receives many requests for tuition assistance. This year there is a substantial increase in the need for tuition financial assistance. Many families want their children to have the Catholic education experience but the tuition expense is a financial burden and they struggle to keep their children in our school year to year. If you or someone you know would like to be a contributor to a Catholic school education for one of our deserving students, please contact the school office at (978) 531-0444. Ext. 336. Any amount donated toward tuition assistance is greatly appreciated.

This summer the St. Vincent de Paul Society is once again sending children in need to day camp at the Peabody/ Lynnfield YMCA. These camperships were instituted in 1990 as a living memorial to Fr. Tom Ray. This summer camp experience expands the horizons of children and provides a needed respite for parents. It costs $350 to send a child to the Peabody/Lynnfield camp for two weeks. If you would like to help us provide this camp experience for children, send your donation to Fr. Tom Ray Campership, c/o St. Vincent de Paul Society. Place your donation in the collection basket or mail it directly to the Parish Center. Checks should be made out to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Donations in any amount will be deeply appreciated.

EDGE Registrations & High School Confirmation Update: We are in the process of restructuring and

Sent out by Jesus to begin gathering the nations into the harvest of divine judgment (see Isaiah 27:12-13; Joel 4:13), the 70 are a sign of the continuing mission of the Church.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) Jesus has a vision in this week’s Gospel - Satan falling like lightning from the sky, the enemy vanquished by the missionary preaching of His Church.

planning our fall schedules; please note that Registrations will be in the mail by July 1st. Thank you for your patience.

Carrying out the work of the 70, the Church proclaims the coming of God's kingdom, offers His blessings of peace and mercy to every household on earth - "every town and place He intended to visit."

Youth Ministry Service Opportunities Many High School programs, and National Honor Societies require volunteer hours for students. Over the summer a students parish is a wonderful place to volunteer and earn easy hours. Consider calling either parish office for the following opportunities:

Our Lord's tone is solemn today. For in the preaching of the Church "the kingdom of God is at hand," the time of decision has come for every person. Those who do not receive His messengers will be doomed like Sodom. But those who believe will find peace and mercy, protection and nourishment in the bosom of the Church, the Mother Zion we celebrate in this week’s beautiful First Reading, the "Israel of God" Paul blesses in this week’s Epistle.

At St. Thomas (978-531-0224): • Love working outside; The Green Thumb Committee (Monday afternoons 3:30-6:30); various jobs helping, mowing, weed whacking, leaf blowing, sweeping or planting. • Strong? Love retail? The Thrift Shop would love your help: Saturday mornings, 9-2AM inside with clothing, toys, and housewares, or outside in the garage with large household items such as furniture, or shelving. • Children's clothing only; The Children's Closet; Saturday's, 1:30-3:30PM; Folding, hanging, or sorting children's clothing. • Love to cook/serve? Haven for Hunger Committee; First Friday of each month, (July 1st, August 5th, September 2nd). Either prepare a Shepherd's Pie at home, or join us at the Haven to serve! (4:30-6:30).

The Church is a new family of faith (see Galatians 6:10) in which we receive a new name that will endure forever (see Isaiah 66:22), a name written in heaven. In this week’s Psalm we sing of God's "tremendous deeds among men" throughout salvation history. But of all the works of God, none has been greater than what He has wrought by the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Changing the sea into dry land was but an anticipation and preparation for our passing over, for what Paul calls the "new creation." And as the exodus generation was protected in a wilderness of serpents and scorpions (see Deuteronomy 8:15), He has given His Church power now over "the full force of the Enemy." Nothing will harm us as we make our way through the wilderness of this world, awaiting the Master of the harvest, awaiting the day when all on earth will shout joyfully to the Lord, sing praise to the glory of His name.

At. St. John's(978-531-0002 The Thrift shop: Sorting, organizing and hanging clothing, housewares. Have all your volunteer hours done before school begins! Please call us and we will put you in touch with those in charge! Come, follow in the footsteps of Christ who calls us to serve with love and compassion for those in need, Summer time is when extraordinary moments happen in everyday ordinary time.
